Whittier Parks And Recreation Classes – “Parks Make Life Better” and the new Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department is committed to enriching the lives of our residents through Whittier’s wonderful parks, recreation and community services, and transportation services.

By merging the Community Services and Parks Departments on July 1, 2010, the City of Whittier was able to streamline the programs and facilities enjoyed by our residents to make visiting a park, attending an evening concert or viewing an art exhibit even more enjoyable. . The Parks Department is under the direction of Virginia Santana, Interim Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services.

The Parks Department is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of Whittier’s 23 parks, green spaces, central streets, and impressive array of park trees, as well as acquiring and developing open space for additional park purposes when opportunities arise. Whittier’s parks include four large community parks, 15 neighborhood parks, two wilderness parks and sports fields and a dog park, along with the Greenway Trail, the walking/biking trail that extends from the 605 Freeway to the corner of Lambert Road and Mills Avenue.

Maintenance of these parks goes hand in hand with community service efforts to provide quality outdoor programming. Other responsibilities of the Park Division to keep Whittier green and beautiful include maintaining the city grounds; site of Civic Center Complex Health Department; landscaped public areas; the Uptown Historic District, including landscaping of the parking lot and galleries; and exterior maintenance of the historic Bailey House. Recognizing the importance of preserving the natural environment, the Parks Department also assists Whittier Hills Preservation efforts through the Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority, the NHPA Citizens Technical Advisory Committee, the Mountains Recreation Conservation Authority and related joint authorities, and maintains street connections to Conservation Authority property.

To achieve the desired results of beauty and safety for the community, the Park Division operates a regular program of maintenance of park facilities; maintenance of playground equipment; Parkway trees, installation and maintenance and contract maintenance; landscape maintenance; irrigation installation and maintenance; street median landscape maintenance; management of maintenance contracts; maintenance of trees in a national park; pool and fountain maintenance; “Welcome Sign” maintenance; installation of flags and holiday decorations; managing Greenwaste/recycling programs in the parks; and handles volunteer work, court referrals, county work programs and scouting projects. Working together, the new Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services will continue to provide the high quality programs, services and facilities our residents have come to expect and enjoy. The Los Angeles County Department of Recreation and Recreation has a long, proud history that has brought us to where we are today.

Prior to becoming a department and recreation division, operations and facilities were managed by 1) the department, which was responsible for maintaining all physical aspects of the Office of the Forest and Fire Marshal, and 2) the Division of Recreation, Camps and Playgrounds, which was responsible for managing all park programs.

On July 1, 1944, the Department and Recreation was created by ordinance and all jobs were combined into this new department. Since then, the County of Los Angeles Department of and Recreation has been meeting the recreational needs of residents and visitors from around the world through programming, facilities, land acquisition and environmental protection, and more!

Classes, Programs & Camps

Today, the department owns 182 scenic areas including natural areas, wildlife areas, lakes, trails, arboretums and botanical gardens, and local, community and regional sites. The league also operates the largest community golf system with 20 courses at 18 locations and great cultural venues including the John Anson Ford Amphitheater and the world famous Hollywood Bowl.

Creative and innovative entertainment programming offers something special for every member of the family, and a number of special events are held annually for the enjoyment of the entire community.

The department is committed to providing social, cultural and recreational opportunities for all to enjoy! The department’s mission and goals are accomplished through unwavering support from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the County Executive, partnerships with other county departments, benefactors, foundations, nonprofits, and other agencies and organizations, and through a team. of talented and dedicated staff and volunteers who fully understand how Make Life Better!
