, it was running Android 10 with Motorola’s My UX skin and the March 2020 security patch. In April 2021, the phone was updated to Android 11.
The Edge Plus is a departure for Motorola when it comes to design. It eschews the basic shape shared by many Motorola phones over the past five to six years in favor of its silhouette. Gone are the wide-radius shoulders, and in their place you’ll see a tall, skinny phone with a sharper look. Due to the elongated aspect ratio, the Edge Plus may remind some of the Sony Xperia range.

In the similar column. Motorola has fully embraced the glass sandwich design. The display glass has a really sharp curve that blends into the side edge. The aluminum frame between the glass panels is incredibly thin along the sides, though it does run through the top and bottom edges. I especially appreciate how the thicker metal is bent to soften the corners. The stitching is solid and the quality of the materials is excellent.
Motorola has created one of the leading full-screen designs. While thick bezels have long hindered its Z series, this phone will almost completely eliminate them. There are no bezels at all on the sides, and the thin piece of aluminum that surrounds the glass at either end is barely visible.
I dig the color options which are Smokey Sangria and Thunder Grey. Our unit is gray. There’s no gradient to the finish, but it has a really attractive sheen, which I was impressed with when I looked at the phone. I also appreciate the headphone jack, which most competitors lack.
In the dislike column. The aluminum side frame has a sharp profile that you can feel pressing against the soft flesh of your palm. It gets old. The volume rocker and the power button are both slim and cheap on the right edge. The power button actually moves a bit, which isn’t great on a phone that costs so much.

Motorola has controlled the dimensions of the rear-mounted camera module, but it is partly made of plastic and feels a little cheap. I don’t know what would make it better, but I know it could be.
The dimensions of the phone are strange. It is very tall, very narrow from side to side, but completely large from front to back. The 9.6 mm thickness means that the Motorola Edge Plus, in particular, is 1-2 millimeters thicker than competing devices. This is significant. The combination of these dimensions means that your thumb can never hope to reach the top of the display so you don’t struggle with the phone in your hand. Throw in a slick exterior and you have a recipe for disaster. Maybe you’d better find a phone case.
And one real failure? The phone is waterproof. Despite many competing devices boasting an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, Motorola has gone ahead with its nano-coated internals, making the Edge Plus simply “splash-proof.” Motorola’s marketing materials clearly state: “waterproof”. Bummer.
Motorola ticks most of the right boxes here. The Edge Plus has almost all the features of the competition as far as raw hardware goes, and—despite my complaints—a solid design to boot.

Motorola has chosen quite a display panel for its flagship comeback. Gone is the nearly flat glass seen on phones like the Moto Z4, and in its place you’ll find the most curved glass panel. Speak differently!
The Edge Plus display wraps around the sides of the phone. This makes it difficult to work with some apps because you may have to click on something around the curve. Fortunately, you can control this to some extent, although it’s on a per-app basis. I would like you to type the changes system wide. Fortunately, the phone avoids the false positive problem, where people could accidentally touch things they didn’t intend to.
Screen size, resolution, refresh rate and aspect ratio are all good. It’s really lively, colorful and sharp. Thanks to a fast 90Hz refresh rate, motion looks incredibly smooth as on-screen elements zoom up and down with a stutter. I really like the advanced controls for blinking notification lights, dark mode, and more. It’s a good screen. Most of the time. I’ll note that today’s flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S21 have 120Hz displays, which makes them smoother.
My biggest gripe with the phone is how the curved glass reacts to the light coming from the display. The screen is noticeably darker around the edges where the curve is, and in some cases causes a blue shift when viewing white content. It’s just the physics of light passing through bent glass. I find it very difficult – just like with older phones that rely on these settings. This makes a narrow screen look even narrower and effectively reduces the usable size of the screen. I wish Motorola had chosen a different display style. Newer phones avoided such sharp curves, resulting in improved visibility.
Best Camera And Battery Phone
With Qualcomm’s best chip for 2020 and 12GB of fast RAM, the Edge Plus passes benchmark tests. It scored an average score of 95 percent in various tests such as AnTuTu, Geekbench and 3DMark. It can’t compete with the Snapdragon 888 in newer phones, but it’s still a solid processor that holds its own.
Most importantly, the phone always felt fast and light. Absolutely nothing bothered the UI, not even a big game like Fortnite. Motorola Edge Plus has all the performance you need.
Motorola is on par with its direct competitors in terms of battery life, at least on some counts. The 5,000 mAh capacity is the same as 2020 and even 2021 flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. Motorola claims that the battery will last more than two days. For six days, I struggled to completely kill the battery. It only screamed when I put it through a brutal 16+ hour stress test. You know what they say about the Energizer Bunny. The screen-on time for my use typically exceeded seven hours.
The phone is a bit limited when it comes to charging speed. It handles 15W wired and wireless charging. We’d have preferred to see 30W or more (which many of Motorola’s competitors support). In fact, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra supports 67W wired and wireless charging. The Edge Plus takes an hour and 50 minutes to fully charge the battery, which is ridiculously slow by today’s standards. Still, you can leave work with 50% and still have more to keep you going all night.

Finally, it handles reverse charging at 5W. This means you can charge select accessories like wireless headphones. At 5W it’s too slow and modern phones have increased this to 10W.
Motorola has been working hard to build its camera brand, and the Edge Plus might be its best move yet. The phone includes a 108-megapixel main sensor, which is reduced four times to 27 megapixels. Motorola did the right thing and loaded the phone with a 3x optical telephoto lens and an ultra-wide/macro lens. The 25-megapixel selfie camera is also downgraded from 4 to 6 megapixels. You can record videos up to 6K.
The application is quite robust. It’s not quite a basic Android camera, but it’s close. It is very simple to use. Shooting modes include: portrait, crop, macro, spot color, night vision, cinemagraph, panorama, live
