Each of the Hawaiian Islands has a nickname. From Hawaii (“the big island”) to Kauai (“the garden island”) and even the small, privately owned Ni’ihau has a nickname (“the forbidden island”). But do you know the nickname of Oahu, the island that most people visit in Hawaii and home to the capital Oahu? Oahu is known as “the Gathering Place”, dating back to when various chiefs would meet on the island to discuss the governance of their lands. Today, it’s a poignant name since so many people make their first (or perhaps only) trip to Oahu when visiting Hawaii.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit Oahu many times in my life; my parents first brought me from Alaska to Oahu when I was a kid, and I remember strolling through the international market and shopping for beloved Hawaiian souvenirs. Since then, I have also visited all the other islands, over the years. Mr. V and I decided to plan one last trip to Hawaii before moving to the Midwest; we decided we had to go with the classic: Oahu.

In this article, you’ll find my guide to visiting Oahu, based on my recent visit as well as some other tips I’ve learned from visiting Hawaii over the past few years. You’ll learn about the best things to do in Oahu and how to make the most of your time if you only have 3 days in Oahu. Before I get to my suggestions for what to do in Oahu and how to create a great 3-day Oahu itinerary, I want to touch on a few important aspects of logistics and travel tips.
As you’ve probably guessed, you can’t exactly take a ferry from the mainland (continental US) to Oahu. (You can, however, cruise from the west coast of North America to Hawaii, like with Royal Caribbean, Princess and Norwegian.)

Most people don’t – they steal. A number of carriers serve the Honolulu Airport on Oahu several times a day: Hawaiian Airlines is the flagship carrier for the Hawaiian Islands; you can also find direct flights from various mainland cities with Alaska, Delta, American, United and Southwest. In 2021, we flew Hawaiian direct from SFO to HNL (Honolulu) in about 4.5 hours each way.
Big Island, beware, but big enough that you’ll need a car to get around if you want to explore beyond Waikiki/Honolulu. The best option is to rent a car in advance. Or, you can try one of the car-sharing options like Turo or Hui (a local Hawaiian service; they recommend reserving a car 5-7 days in advance).
If you decide to spend the 3 days on Oahu in Honolulu, you can get around on foot, using the bike share program (Biki Bikes), using the bus (called “The Bus”), or carpooling with Uber (we tried Lyft and it was cheaper but there were far fewer drivers so we ended up waiting
Oahu basically has the same climate as the other Hawaiian Islands; I recommend checking my Hawaii packing list to make sure you have everything you need.

But if you’re short on time and only have 3 days on Oahu, we have to cut it down a bit. So here are some of the best ideas to inspire you. As you’ll see in the next section, you can squeeze most of them into a short trip if you want!
I’ll be honest: with only three days, most people will read this one and stop here. Soaking it all up on Oahu’s most famous beach – and arguably Hawaii’s most scenic – is more than enough appealing way to spend three days, isn’t it?!
Pro-Tip: Pre-arrange a Duke’s Lagoon umbrella and lounge chairs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for $50. They settle right in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village and offer you a reserved place in the first row for the beach! To save, you can also reserve a beach chair from 5:00 p.m. until sunset for $10 from one of the vendors at the southern end of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Beach.
Honolulu is not limited to Waikiki, its most popular tourist district. In fact, some of the best local spots are when you escape the crowds at the beaches and in the boutique restaurants along Kalākaua Avenue.

With only 3 days on Oahu, you may not be able to explore many other neighborhoods, but Chinatown near downtown Honolulu is a must-see. Here you will find the
Restaurants and bars in town (although there are a few in other parts of town, including near Waikiki), and can learn a bit more about local life in the Hawaiian capital.
Going back to a sightseeing option, if this is your first trip to Hawaii, you should definitely consider attending a luau. These semi-cultural events are usually offered in conjunction with dinner. As a result, they command a high price which tourists are willing to pay. At a luau, you’ll learn about Hawaiian culture (well packaged for tourist consumption) and sample Hawaiian food (if they have poi on the menu, go for it!). It’s a good way to incorporate a bit of cultural experience without stepping too far out of your comfort zone.

Since you’re likely to be based in Honolulu (specifically Waikiki) for a three-day trip to Oahu, you can easily access the volcanic remains that dominate the landscape. Lē’ahi (more commonly known as Diamond Head) is an easy 60-90 minute hike from the parking lot; Mr. V and I actually cycled to the front door and covered Lē’ahi in about 2 hours. From the top of Lē’ahi, you will have an incredible view of Waikiki and the surrounding area of the island.

Here’s another one that requires a rental car; Pearl Harbor is a national memorial and national cemetery dedicated to service members who lost their lives in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
The current site is made up of several places accessible by bus, but the most common is the
Memorial. You can explore the site to learn about the historical setting that led to the Japanese attack on America (and the start of WWII), then take a ferry to the memorial building above the final location the ship’s rest at Pearl Harbor.

While you have that rental car, consider making the trip a bit further afield, to the North Shore of Oahu. It is renowned for the best surfing on the island and attracts a markedly different crowd of tourists than the southern beaches.
Here, you’ll find transplants and longtime travelers living the dream and catching some waves. There are also amazing beaches here too, as well as fantastic food trucks and other holes in the wall that dot the North Shore serving everything from poke and poi to grilled shrimp and shaved ice.
