A supervisor, or manager, (also known as foreman, boss, supervisor, facilitator, monitor, area coordinator, line manager, or sometimes gaffer) is the job title of a lower-level management position based primarily on authority over workers or a workplace.

A supervisor can also be one of the most senior members of staff at the workplace, for example a professor supervising a doctoral thesis. On the other hand, supervision can be carried out by persons without this formal title, for example by parts. The term supervisor itself can be used to refer to all employees who have this task as part of their job description.

What Is The Job Role Of A Supervisor

A supervisor is responsible for the productivity and actions of a small group of employees. The supervisor has several manager-like roles, responsibilities and powers. Two of the main differences between a supervisor and a manager are (1) the supervisor usually does not have “hiring authority” and (2) the supervisor does not have budget authority. Supervisors are not considered part of the organization’s proper management and are instead seen as sior members of the workforce. In contrast to middle managers, the supervisors’ influence is essential for the completion of the work.

Lack of “hiring and firing authority” means that a supervisor cannot recruit the employees who work in the supervisor group and also does not have the authority to dismiss an employee. The supervisor may participate in the hiring process as part of the interview and assessment of candidates, but the actual hiring authority rests in the hands of a Human Resource Manager. The supervisor may recommend that a particular employee be terminated, and the supervisor may be the one to document the behavior leading to the recommendation, but the actual firing authority rests in the hands of a manager.

Lack of budget authority means that a supervisor receives a budget developed by the management within which limitations the supervisor is expected to provide a productive environment for the employees in the supervisor’s work group. A supervisor will usually be authorized to make purchases within specified limits. A supervisor is also authorized to approve working hours and other salary issues. Normally, budget affecting requests such as travel require not only supervisor approval, but approval by one or more layers of administration.

As a member of managementmt, a supervisor’s main job is more concerned with orchestrating and controlling work rather than directly executing it.

Managers are uniquely positioned through direct daily contact with employees to respond to employee needs, problems and satisfaction. Supervisors are the direct link between management and the workforce and can be most effective in developing job training, safety attitudes, safe work practices and identifying unsafe acts.

Many employers have supervisor manuals that must be followed. Supervisors must be aware of their legal responsibilities to ensure that their employees work safely and that the workplace they are responsible for meets government standards.

As industrial and commercial terprises grew in size—especially after the introduction of techniques from the Industrial Revolution—the perceived need for supervisors and foremen grew in step.
