You must also set up an account with MyRECA. myRECA is RECA’s educational platform that allows you to register for Alberta Real Estate exams. This account is free and only takes a couple of minutes to set up. So you would set up an account there and start your eligibility application here.
The option you want to choose there is called the Education Eligibility Application. They have a couple of different options, for a person who has moved here from another province, and they have a license there, which is not for someone who is new to licensing.
Note: If you have moved from another province, you are essentially transferring your license, which is a different process and therefore not covered in this blog. This is for anyone new to real estate who doesn’t have a real estate license anywhere else and wants to start this process in Alberta.
Go to myRECA.ca and start your eligibility application. It will charge you $100. This is a non-refundable fee. After payment, RECA will start the application process.

The next step is to complete your pre-licensing education. After submitting all documents, you will receive RECA’s approval. Only then can you enroll in your pre-licensing education to obtain your Realtor® License. You must apply for at least 2 courses with RECA to apply for Pre-Licensing Education.
This course provides you with the basic knowledge and skills you need to practice real estate in Alberta. The cost of this course is $1250. This is an online course and you would register for this course online through the RECA website.
The course fee will include access to your online course materials, and they also have a help desk if you have problems accessing the course. You will also have access to the e-book online or you can purchase course manuals from RECA. There are 2 (large) manuals for the course. There are 10 units in this course. You will need to complete the online activities and quizzes for each unit before appearing for the final exam. After completing the units, you can take a practice exam and then write the final exam.

Exams can be taken at authorized exam centers, they are not held at RECA. You can see the list of authorized RECA Exam Centers for details. Currently, due to COVID-19, RECA offers the possibility to take exams online. You can book them directly through your myRECA account at myRECA.ca.
The second course you would take is one of the specialty areas where you can choose which area you want to specialize in.
You must complete one of these courses to obtain your Realtor® license in Alberta. You can always take more than one course, but initially, you must start with one of the courses in the list above.
Most people will start with residential real estate, and then when they are licensed and want to expand their practice, they will go back and take more courses if needed, so if you want to do property management or commercial real estate. then you can always come back and do it later.
Using A Buyer’s Agent
You have 12 months between the 2 courses to complete the education requirements. You must complete both of these courses within one year of enrolling in the first course.
In summary, a total of 2 Courses and 2 Exams will complete your pre-licensing education for real estate in Alberta.
After completing your pre-licensing courses, the next step is to obtain the Certification Certification Certification (CCRC).
There are different types of criminal background checks, the one you are looking for is the one with fingerprints. It takes a little longer, they have to send everything to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Ottawa and then you get the results.

It will now take approximately two to three weeks for RECA to receive your results, and you will be able to send your results directly to RECA. So you don’t get the results directly, but RECA does, it’s a faster process.
And if you have a criminal background check within six months, you can still apply using the same CCRC account, you don’t have to do it again. Please note that the criminal record must be less than 6 months.
To obtain a license, you must be contracted by a brokerage, otherwise you cannot apply for a license.
I recommend that you talk to two or three different brokerages, see which brokerage best suits your needs, and sign up with them. Once you go to the brokerage, they will fill out an application, which will then be sent to RECA and after that you will be able to get your license.
