As listening habits have shifted away from radio, visual media have become more important for discovering new music. As key scenes in movies and TV shows unfold, we may find ourselves searching the web to identify which song we’re hearing. But who decides what song is played during these moments?

. She says she gets upwards of 50 pitches a day from people who want songs on TV.

“There are record labels, there are music publishers, there are third-party pitching companies; there are production music libraries, producers, songwriters, managers, artists,” she lists. “I get music sent to me all day, every day.”

They’re all hoping for something called “sync placement,” the industry term for matching a song to what’s happening on screen. Licensing that song can earn an artist anywhere from a few thousand dollars to more than $100,000. Negotiating terms often means clearing rights with everyone from record labels to multiple songwriters on a single track. But Krieg Thomas says the creative element can also be challenging.

“It’s all led by the showrunner’s vision, and so my job is to service that vision,” she says. “Sometimes it’s about pitching song ideas, sometimes it’s about clearing songs they want. Sometimes it’s about coming up with the wallpaper, if you will, of the sound of the show.”

Sustained TV exposure helped propel the single up to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and launch Platten’s career as a multi-platinum selling artist. McDonough says there is no perfect song for an ad, although some generalities apply.

“You know, you’ll hear it [loud pounding] in a lot of ads where people are trying to be tough and tough,” he says. “Before that, it was this ‘ukuleles and hand claps and whistles thing.

McDonough says what matters most to brands is whether the song can help tell a story in 30 seconds; for artists, it’s how often that story reaches our ears, but both benefit from media buys, or how often the commercial runs.

Putting songs in front of listeners used to be the domain of label A&R reps, industry talent scouts who lean on radio DJs to promote emerging artists. But today, TV has become so effective that even established artists like Grimes, Migos and Beck sign deals to plug their songs into ads before they appear on album releases.

In the words of music supervisor Morgan Rhodes: “Placement is kind of the new A&R.” Rhodes says she looks for opportunities to introduce audiences to artists who haven’t gotten much exposure.

Rhodes was spinning records at member station KCRW in Los Angeles when filmmaker Ava DuVernay invited her to work on the 2012 feature.

. Since then, Rhodes has overseen the music for several of DuVernay’s projects, including the 2014 Civil Rights drama,

“There was no limit to where I looked [for inspiration]: news articles, conversations with family members,” she says. “And it was a wonderful experience, especially uncovering some artists who hadn’t seen placements and maybe weren’t that well remembered.”

One of these artists was Martha Bass. Rhodes chose one of her songs, “Walk With Me,” for a key scene: the confrontation at the Edmund Pettus Bridge during the 1965 march from

Directed by Justin Simien, she thought back to an independent artist she featured on her radio show a few years earlier.

With tens of thousands of tracks uploaded to music streaming services every day, James Tillman says he tries to get his songs out in as many ways as possible.

“I was on Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud, Bandcamp,” he says. “I just wanted to make sure the music was everywhere it could be.”

“It showed me that it leveled the playing field in some ways, giving me a chance to at least reach people,” he says.

Rhodes says that with such a crowded streaming environment, TV can help cut through all the online noise.

What Is A Music Supervisor?

“I’ve seen a kind of shift in people looking at television as an ear for them, looking at television as a source for new music in the same way that we look at places like Spotify,” she says.

But song placement still isn’t a magic bullet: Despite landing his song on a hit TV show, James Tillman remains unsigned.

“A placement can significantly impact your career, but it probably won’t push it over the edge,” he says. What is a Music Tutor? Learn the role of music supervisor and the art of music supervision to reach a new audience with your music.

Getting a track placed in visual media is a great way for your music to reach a wider audience. To do that, you need to understand music monitoring. This blog post will go over the basics of music tutoring and the role of a music tutor. It also provides examples of TV shows and movies with excellent music monitoring to help you understand where your music might fit.

Have you ever watched a movie or TV show and discovered a new artist because of the background music? In that case, you have the music supervisor to thank.

Music supervision is the process of pairing existing music with visual media. Television, movies, commercials, video games, and other visual media platforms rely on music supervision to license existing songs.

Music supervision is also separate from scoring. The composer hired to write an original score for a media production does not own the master rights to the score. The production company that paid for the score owns the master rights. For example, Lucasfilm owns every piece of music that John Williams wrote for all eight Star Wars films. They can use that music on their own for any purpose if they own it.

A music supervisor oversees all music-related aspects of television, film, advertising, video games, and other existing or emerging visual media platforms. Music supervisors also act as intermediaries between the artists and the companies or directors who license the music. Artists own their music (for the most part) and companies license the music for their production. As such, a good music tutor must have industry knowledge and good taste to select the right music. They also need to know how music and image are connected. Additionally, a skilled music supervisor will understand licensing and creative rights.

Music Supervisors Aren’t Treated Fairly, Here’s What’s Going On

A significant part of the music supervisor’s job is to negotiate terms with whoever owns the music that the director wants to use for a production. For the most part, the negotiations are simple. Music supervisors will draw up sync license contracts and master license contracts for recordings. Together, these two licenses allow the master recording to be synchronized into a production.

However, there are times when a project may require recording a cover version of a song. For example, when the master recording license is too expensive or difficult to obtain within a certain time frame. When this happens, the music supervisor will produce a cover of the requested song. In this case, the music supervisor oversees the entire production. For example, they find the musicians, book the studio, manage the necessary contracts and more.

These situations are just a few examples of what can arise for a music supervisor. Each production is different and therefore requires different musical needs.

There are worldwide companies that handle the licensing of music for various media. These companies are known as performance rights organizations (PROs). PROs collect licensing fees on behalf of songwriters, composers and music publishers. They also distribute them as royalties to those whose copyrighted works were used in a public setting.

The two largest PROs are The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI). Together, these two represent PRO’s millions of songwriters and compositions. According to Billboard, in 2018 BMI collected $1.199 billion in licensing fees and distributed $1.12 billion in royalties.

You may have noticed the absence of the word “music producer” related to BMI and ASCAP. That’s because music producers who create music with Ableton Live are considered songwriters. For music producers, the best way to place music in visual media is to become a member of BMI. BMI is better for TV and film placement, while ASCAP is more for engineers and other areas of the music industry.

You can become a member by simply paying a fee. Once you are a member of BMI, your music is in their repertoire. From there,
