I was in Canada this week and on my way back to New York via the Ottawa airport I chose to have a body scan. Something triggered the metal detector. Maybe they guessed the underwire in my bra. So security offered, “Pat down or scan?” I opted for the scan as I was in a rush and the pat downs took too long. Sometimes up to 15 minutes. Easy to scan. But every time I had a scan (three times) I felt uncomfortable.
What Do Tsa Agents See On Body Scan
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) plans to install body scanners in every security check lane by 2014. And TSA ensures that scanners “pose no risk to the health or safety of any passenger.” They are cleared by the Food and Drug Administration and have been used in airports around the world for years. Invasive’ Airport Screening Stirs Backlash Among Airline Passengers
In independent, peer-reviewed studies, radiation experts have determined that an X-ray scanner can cause cancer in six to 100 airline passengers each year. Outside of the United States, some countries use X-ray imaging machines, also known as backscatters, in their airports. The FDA does not have the authority to approve body scanners before they are sold because they are electronic products, not medical devices.
Last November the European Union decided to ban X-ray body scanners at all European airports. Now members of Congress are asking the TSA to conduct an independent security review.
TSA currently uses two types of scanners, a millimeter-wave machine and a backscatter X-ray machine. ProPublica breaks down the two here.

All About The Tsa Body Scanner Image
The TSA only uses a simple unisex image that looks like a cartoon outline of a human being to resolve the controversy of the “virtual strip search”, see image below left.
There are no health risks with a millimeter wave machine. Currently, there are nearly 300 airports in the US, including major hubs such as Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth and San Francisco. U.S. The L-3 communications provision uses the scanner, which runs about $170,000 to $180,000.
A backscatter machine (below) emits a low-intensity X-ray beam at the body. Now these rays don’t pass through the body like your regular medical X-rays, but the rays are reflected back to the detectors, which create a low resolution, white 2D image (also below.)
Images will be deleted after clearing. According to the TSA, each scan gives off less than 10 microrem of radiation, equivalent to the radiation we’d experience if we flew at 30,000 feet for three minutes. This seems to contradict the above statement regarding studies that have found that six to 100 people can develop cancer from these machines. I imagine a lot of variables (current health of passengers) need to be accounted for in doing accurate studies. For example, living in New York City increases my chances of getting breast cancer. These machines should be compared to other sources of radiation that we are exposed to every day in cities.
What To Do If You Think Your Tsa Pat Down Screening Crosses A Line
But exactly, people ask why the TSA chooses to use backscatter as opposed to just millimeter wave machines. From ProPublica:
TSA puts both technologies in play to encourage manufacturers to improve detection efficiency while reducing cost to taxpayers. The agency says the x-ray machine is safe, with radiation equal to that received by passengers flying for two minutes at altitude. But ProPublica found some potential problems with the millimeter-wave scanner. Many other countries report high rates of false alarms caused by innocuous objects such as folds in clothing, buttons, and sweat.

Last month, the Transportation Security Administration began slowly rolling out high-tech body scanners, funded with $73 million in federal stimulus funds, that give screeners the ability to look under passengers’ clothing while searching for weapons. The devices use low doses of radiation to create a computerized image of a person’s body.

“Advanced imaging technology is an integral tool in TSA’s layered terrorism approach that allows us to stay ahead of threats to aviation security,” TSA Administrator John S. Pistole said in a written statement. “We are committed to deploying imaging technology to protect the traveling public.”
At the same time, screeners have begun “enhanced” pat-downs of airline passengers who opt for a body scanner or set off a metal detector. The new searches require screeners to touch passengers’ breasts and genitalia.
According to the TSA 98 percent of travelers choose body scans over other screening measures. Experts say a body scan can identify the powder explosive that terror suspect Umar Farooq Abdulmutallab stuffed in his underwear and detonated on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit over Christmas, the agency said.
“We believe the program is illegal, invasive and ineffective,” he said. “Frankly, I can’t believe that the people who defend this program are still citing the Christmas Day bomber as justification, but the effort was not doomed to failure by those machines.”
Is The Radiation From Airport Body Scanners Dangerous?
EPIC’s Verdi said the machines would show the underwear, but not the bomb planted inside.
EPIC filed its lawsuit against the TSA in July, seeking an emergency halt to the program. The judge does not grant the suspension but allows the case to proceed on an emergency basis.
“We have a very strong case,” Verdi said. “The real question is how much authority does the TSA have to conduct searches at U.S. airports. Is it unlimited or are there limits? If the court blesses it, they say they can do anything.”
There are 385 body scanners at 68 airports in the country. TSA plans to have a total of 450 in use by the end of the year and another 500 by the end of the year.
Body Scanners Cause Cancer? Well Maybe
The House passed a bill in June 2009 that “prohibits whole-body imaging technology from being used as the sole or primary method of screening passengers.” But it stalled in the Senate and is unlikely to be considered in the lame duck session.
One website has designated November 24, the day before Thanksgiving and one of the busiest travel days of the year, as National Outage Day. The website asked citizens to opt out of the body scan and submit to a public pat-down.
“The goal of National Opt Out Day is to send a message to our lawmakers that we demand change,” the website states. “No naked body scanners, no government-sanctioned strip searches. We have a right to privacy, and buying a plane ticket doesn’t mean we’re guilty until proven innocent.”
Pilot unions are urging their members to stay away from body scanners at airports to avoid health problems from exposure to scanner radiation.

Unions representing pilots for American Airlines and US Airways, which represent a total of 16,500 pilots, have said they want a more efficient screening process instead of passing pilots through the same security procedures used for passengers.
