This article I wrote a while ago but over the years it has grown and grown. How come? It’s great because we keep making more weather crafts over the years because we love them so much and there’s always something special we can make!

Weather is a great topic for kids to learn about and it’s one you can come back to again and again throughout the year as the seasons change.
My kids love reading about the world they live in and young children can enjoy looking at pictures of different climates while you share a book with them.

Have you tried the Rain Cloud Experiment? This easy, fun weather activity for kids is a great way to help kids understand how clouds and water are related. Basically you fill your glass 3/4 of the way up with water. Now fill the remaining space with white shaving cream. Use an eye dropper to add a few drops of food coloring to the top of the shaving cream cloud.
When the cloud is too heavy (full of water), the droplets fall into the cloud like rain! Tell the children that when raindrops are too heavy in the sky, gravity pulls them down from the clouds as water. This simple rain test is an easy way to demonstrate.

Then to show how clouds affect moisture the children put 20 drops of colored food into the “cloud” It took about 7 minutes for my son’s cloud to become so heavy that it started to rain – you can see the colored water. My daughter’s year went by so fast. We speculated that it was because his shaving cream cloud layer was too small (so it would fill up quickly) or that he ended up putting moisture (eating the color) on top. It was interesting to see the difference as I watched the rain while the clouds remained white.
This weather experiment is simple and easy to make, gives a WOW that kids will remember, and is a great example of why it’s raining for kids.
We tried making clouds in a bottle! If you look closely you can see a vertical wispy cloud! Isn’t it beautiful?! Instructions are in the FREE Weather Pack.
We observed the clouds for a few weeks and made a graph. Cloudless days truly “won”. We did some fun, preschool-style worksheets. One of our favorites is the Roll & Add Cloud worksheets. They loved putting their colored magnets on top of the rainbow numbers the rolled dice add up to.
Weather Art For Kids
We also made cloud crafts using the classic – a cotton ball cloud! It may be old, but it’s still fun for kids today =)
I don’t know about you, but it’s a good thing given that if we’re going to study for years we won’t have it! (You saw our chart above, right?!) Because I know that’s how things go, I started taking pictures of the clouds before I left. I put the cloud prints in protective paper and let the kids draw to make the clouds come to life. This was the inner way of lying on the grass, looking up at the clouds, and seeing things in them – the way I had.
