The most powerful and sustainable way to support positive community development is through education. Quality education – SDG Goal #4 – is a life-changing opportunity. Education contributes to people’s ability to gain opportunities for advancement in their lives and empowers communities to deal with the problems they face permanently.
Unfortunately, not everyone has access to educational opportunities. As of 2018, more than 258 million children, aged 6-17, were out of school worldwide. The majority of these young people live in sub-Saharan Africa, where 60% of young people no longer attend school at the age of 15-17. Lack of resources, teachers, and appropriate learning environments in Africa make it extremely difficult to provide educational opportunities to children in poverty-stricken areas.
Volunteering Opportunities For Older Adults
Our volunteer teaching programs aim to empower communities by supporting underfunded and understaffed African schools. As a volunteer at one of our study abroad programs, you’ll support local teachers by providing one-on-one support to students struggling with class concepts. This personal attention can be life-changing for students who may be falling behind in school. Additionally, volunteers will support sustainable community development by teaching English to adult students to improve their literacy! If you want to make a difference in the development of children, adults and entire communities, becoming a volunteer teacher is an incredible way to do so.
Our voluntary education projects start from £795 and increase depending on the length of your stay and the plan you join. These costs include volunteer accommodation, meals, 24/7 African Impact in-country support, project and airport transportation, project orientation, and any project supplies volunteers may need.
Additionally, as a commitment to sustainable development in the communities we work in, all volunteers pay an additional £20 to support the African Impact Sustainability Fund. While we believe that volunteering is an incredible way to create positive change in a local community, we recognize that volunteer outreach programs are not an all-inclusive solution for community development. This money goes directly to the African Impact Foundation, which independently ensures the sustainability of our projects in local communities. We believe that volunteer education is a life-changing experience for both communities and volunteers. In turn, we want this experience to be accessible to all and give everyone the opportunity to experience the incredible benefits that study abroad has to offer. For our volunteer teaching programs in Africa, we do not require volunteers to have prior education or teaching experience to join.
How To (almost) Volunteer In Africa For Free
Before you begin your teaching program, you go through a rigorous training program with local African influence practitioners. Here, we will discuss important information about teaching English, appropriate student interaction, interesting information about your destination, cultural sensitivity, as well as a comprehensive overview of our child protection policy. This training program is a great opportunity for volunteers from around the world to connect and learn all the information they will need to know to teach English in Africa before starting their project.
At African Influence, our volunteer teaching projects focus on four main focuses. Each of our volunteer programs combines these focuses in a slightly different way, depending on the needs of the community. In sub-Saharan Africa, teachers are largely understaffed. As a result, a typical African classroom often has over 40 children with a single teacher. With teacher-to-student ratios, many children are neglected — through no fault of the teacher — in the classroom setting they need the one-sided attention they need to thrive.
As a classroom volunteer, you’ll help local teachers by helping them plan lessons and identify students who may seem to be lagging behind. With these students, you’ll then provide the personal attention they might not otherwise receive, going through previous lessons at a slower pace to help them grasp the essential concepts. This one-on-one tutoring is not only a rewarding opportunity for you, the volunteer, but can change the life and academic trajectory of a child struggling in school.

After-school programs in Africa are a great opportunity to support positive child development, creating an exciting environment for children to play and learn while their parents work. These programs also support a healthy lifestyle for growing children, providing children with a safe place to spend after school hours, keeping them away from harmful activities such as substance abuse.
Volunteer teachers will support these after-school programs by spending time with young children in developmental activities and engaging in meaningful conversations with youth who may have questions about growing up. Through these classes, we aim to empower local people in their English speaking skills and improve their employability.
