Many travelers who want to stay at Soneva Fushi or Soneva Jani often wonder which is better, and this is the question I get asked the most about Soneva Resorts. IMHI, Soneva Fushi offers a beach and island experience, with plenty to do and exceptional dining experiences. Soneva Jani offers an over-the-water experience, incredible villas with sliding and retractable roofs, and a focus on tranquility and overall well-being. My personal advice is to stay at both resorts and combine them into one itinerary (4 to 5 nights at each resort) to experience the best of both worlds. Soneva operates daily transfers between both resorts (private or shared), so it is very easy to get from Soneva Fushi to Soneva Jani or vice versa (just an hour from Jau).
No matter which resort you choose to stay at (Soneva Fushi or Soneva Jani or a combination of both), once you stay at a Soneva Resort, it’s this: you’re in love. There is no turning back. And apparently, I’m not the only one who feels so passionately about Soneva: 60% of visitors to the Maldives’ original luxury hotel, Soneva Fushi, are returning.

In this article, I will compare the following 15 features between both resorts in detail and declare a winner in each category:
Soneva Fushi is a tropical paradise unmatched in the world. The entire island is covered in a lush green forest and completely surrounded by blinding-white, palm-fringed beaches and a ridiculously clear, sparkling turquoise lagoon. From a scenic perspective, it’s the most picturesque island I’ve visited in the Indian Ocean archipelago of the Maldives, and its spectacular, soft-sand beaches are easily among the best in the world. It is important to note that Soneva Fushi is not a beach club; Instead, all jungle villas have direct access to the beach (with two sunbeds placed on the sand in front of each villa).
Soneva Jani’s two overwater jetties are also connected to a tropical island called Medhufaru. The latter is one of the largest islands in the Maldives, but it offers a different kind of beauty: it is not as lush and full of palms as Soneva Fushi, and mangroves are the main ecosystem. Also, the island is not completely surrounded by beaches, and ‘only’ two beaches are open to guests, but they come with a beach club: there is a small beach club (with a water sports center) at the northern end of Medhufaru (North Beach). . ; (near Chapter One Jetty) and a very large beach club with a few restaurants on the southern end of the island (South Beach; near Chapter Two Jetty).
Soneva Jani is situated within a 5.6 km (3.5 mi) lagoon of crystal clear water with uninterrupted 360° views of the Indian Ocean. It is the largest and most beautiful lagoon of its kind in the Maldives. The lagoon is so big that 7,000 Olympic swimming pools can fit inside it. It is impossible to find words to describe the intensely mesmerizing blue of the lagoon water. These fifty shades of blue strike the entire Maldivian archipelago and are located in the shallows of each of the atoll islands, but they are not as blue and clear as Soneva Jani (especially at the Adhiya One Jetty). In fact, these are the most vibrant shades of blue I’ve seen in all my years of traveling around the world. Four of the lagoon’s five islands are completely undeveloped, so there’s always somewhere to play castaways.
All Inclusive Resorts
Soneva Fushi is also located in an incredibly stunning lagoon, although not as stunning as the one at Soneva Jani. Soneva Fushi’s lagoon is more distinctive than what you can find on other islands in the Maldives: clear blue, shallow water surrounds the island and drops off suddenly a few dozen meters offshore, resulting in a sudden change in water color from light blue to dark blue (unlike Soneva Jani, where you (see light blue until the eyes dilate). Also, about 650 m (2100 ft) from the sunset side of Soneva Fushi is the island of Eydhafushi, the capital of Ba Atoll, which is clearly visible on the horizon (with some concrete buildings and antennas). This can take away the feeling of being left on an island to some extent.
Soneva Fushi is located in the heart of the remote Baa Atoll in the Maldives. The latter has been declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, as it supports the largest group of coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. Thus, it should come as no surprise that Soneva Fushi is a diver’s dream, offering easy access to some of the world’s most fascinating scuba diving sites. The resort has its own PADI-certified dive center, and professional scuba diving instructors guide tours to more than 30 sites, such as Hanifaru Bay, home to the world’s largest population of manta rays. If you’re not comfortable or don’t like diving, you’ll be happy to know that the snorkeling at Soneva Fushi’s house reef is excellent. Turtles and dolphins also often pass close to the island (especially around sunset). The resort’s dive center provides diving masks with optical lenses for goggle-wearing guests.
While incredibly beautiful, Soneva Jani’s lagoon is not full of fish, although I noted that there is more wildlife there now than on my last visit three years ago (harmless sharks and stingrays frequent the waters around the villa daily). Due to the lack of fish within the lagoon, Soneva Jani offers snorkeling trips by boat to the house reef on the outer edge of the lagoon. All species of corals are present here, along with fish and huge old coral colonies creating a beautiful shallow 3D reefscape with many dive sites surrounding the resort with rich marine life, sure to entice all marine enthusiasts. But again, if snorkeling and diving is what you are looking for, you are better off staying at Soneva Fushi.
Sonbha Jani’s focus is on an overwater experience. Within its vast lagoon are 51 overwater villas and a few beach villas, making Soneva Jani one of the lowest-density resorts in the world. The scale of the villas is exceptional, with both one-bedroom (catering to couples and families with young children) and multi-bedroom villas (catering to larger travel parties) available. The overwater villas are located along two jetties connected to Medhufaru Island and meander like a snake through the blue water. At more than 410 square meters (4413 square feet), the one-bedroom villas are the largest entry-level villas.
