Vacation Journal – I hope February is going well for you so far. Here in Washington we have had an amazing few spring days and we are all very excited! Washington weather can always be a joke.
Luckily for my family, we are heading into winter break and our good friends asked to join us on an amazing road trip to hit 5 National Parks! We will travel through Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah. It will be amazing and much needed for our active family. To get to all these places, we will have to miss a few days of school the week before the break.

Planning this trip and having to miss a few days of school got me thinking about one of the most popular resources I created for this very reason. I would always have students traveling to my classroom, some on planned family trips and some impromptu. One thing all these student trips had in common was asking for work to be done while they were away.

So what I decided to do was make a travel holiday journal for students that showed multiple fundamental skills that could easily be applied to anyone’s travels, would require little to no tutor support and of course was fun . I also liked that this journal provided a great tool for students to share their journey in an organized way when they return to school.
This travel journal includes plenty to keep students engaged on their trip, but not overwhelmed. I made sure the activities were applicable to a wide range of student ages and abilities.
A great advantage of this journal is that you can simply print it and send it with your student or email it to parents in the case of the impromptu traveler. No need to plan and print tons of work for students while they’re away! My trick… is that I always have about 5 of these printed journals in my file to keep my life simple.

We have used the newspapers several times on our family trips. I actually already have my own kids printed out for our trip this week. We usually journal at the end of the day before bed. We also love looking at fun postcards, tickets or stickers from different activities to include in the artefacts section.
