Vacation Grocery Delivery

Vacation Grocery Delivery – Vacation rentals have become increasingly popular for so many travelers in recent years, with services like VRBO and Airbnb booming. Many family travelers have long known how a vacation rental provides them with much more space and convenience. Having amenities like a washer and dryer or a full kitchen when traveling with young children is also valuable. And in the past few years, travelers of all types have discovered vacation rentals more than ever to secure extra space and avoid the crowds.

My family regularly stays in vacation rentals in destinations as diverse as the beaches of Alabama to the ski slopes of Park City, Utah. We recently returned from a week long summer getaway to a townhouse in a Lake Tahoe resort community. One of the most important parts of planning our trip was figuring out what we were going to eat, who was going to cook it, and what supplies we needed to make it happen.

Although we usually eat out when we travel a lot, we decided to cook in the rental quite a bit more this trip. This meant more groceries to bring in and buy.

A comprehensive grocery shopping list proved essential to the success of our trip! If you’re preparing for a vacation rental too, here’s everything you need to know to make your grocery prep more successful, too.

Many vacation rentals, especially those managed by professional companies, come with starter kits with plenty of groceries and toiletries. You may find basics like toilet paper, paper towels, dishwashing liquid, a sponge, or more already in your unit. We’ve even found a few vacation rentals that come with cooking spray, salt and pepper, olive oil, and more. So before you make a long shopping list and buy things you don’t need, ask first.

Don’t forget to ask about the cooking options available to you when you rent – is it a gas or electric stove? Is there a grill just for the unit or in shared spaces? Is it propane or coal? These options can also shape what types of food and kitchen supplies you should bring or purchase.

Before you travel, it’s also important to look into available grocery options near your vacation rental. Is there a huge supermarket minutes away or is there only a smaller and more expensive convenience store nearby? Are delivery services like Instacart or street pick-up options available to save you time? Knowing which stores are available, and how likely they are to stock the supplies you need (and at what price!) will help you decide how to prepare.

While you may plan to do most of your grocery shopping at your destination, consider what you can bring from home. Is there a hard-to-find brand that is a favorite must-have in your family? Buy it in advance and bring it to avoid disappointment. There are also some items that may be in short supply in many destinations, so definitely bring them from home – a lesson we all learned well from the massive shortage of Clorox wipes in 2020!

Also consider bringing smaller quantities of items you won’t use much to avoid having to buy a full container. For example, if you only plan to use a unique spice once or twice in your cooking, pack enough of it in a plastic bag at home and carry it with you. Sample sizes can also be very useful when traveling. We pre-bought most of the non-perishables we needed before our last trip, so we only bought refrigerated items and a few bulky extras.

Of course, if you’re flying instead of driving, you’ll be limited in what you can bring by luggage space and airline baggage fees. And even if you are on the road, the space in the trunk is not unlimited. So be realistic about what you can carry.

We have often played a large part of our vacation rentals by eating by ear on our previous trips. On our last trip, my organizationally minded daughter insisted we make a meal plan for dinner every night. We were traveling with a large family from our balloon, so this allowed us to split the cooking duties between everyone. More importantly, any adult can figure out what supplies are needed for a meal and pack them or add them to the general grocery list. We were also able to plan ahead for dinners when we ordered takeout and avoid scheduling on Saturday nights when restaurants are at their busiest.

Speaking of shopping lists, make one before your trip! We started charting our entire week before our trips and still remembered things even while traveling to our destination. I guarantee that if you go to a store without planning ahead, you’ll find yourself having to make several return trips for the essentials you forgot. Who wants to waste precious vacation time going back and forth to the store? Advance planning is essential.

Sometimes it’s really hard to estimate exactly how much your family will eat while on vacation. Hopefully the feeding schedule will help somewhat with this. But I find that everyone tends to eat a little more on vacation! As a result, we tend to buy a little more than we think we’ll need, especially special holiday snacks and treats like potato chips or crackers that we might be more liberal with than at home. And we also find that we really cut down on drinks of all kinds on vacation.

So don’t be afraid to buy a little more. It’s better to have a little extra at the end of the trip rather than having to do a last minute grocery shop on the last day of your trip to have enough for everyone to eat. If you end up buying too much, you can always take some home or leave unused items and a note for the cleaning company to let them know they are free to take whatever they want.

Now that you have a grocery plan, let’s talk about specific foods and other grocery list items. Obviously, every traveler has different taste preferences and dietary needs. So this list includes the basics that many average families could consume, with a few prompts to include additional items that suit your family’s specific preferences.

When it comes to grocery delivery services, “what you end up paying for is convenience,” said Lisa Young, assistant professor of nutrition at New York University. Instead of taking time out of your day to visit a store, wander aisles and wait in line to check out, you can quickly order food and other household goods online and choose a day and time for them to arrive on your doorstep.

And besides helping you save time, grocery delivery services can also help you save money on food. “By not being in the store, you won’t make impulse purchases,” said nutritionist Ariane Resnick, chef and author of The Special Diet. “These may be products that you try not to eat because they are not healthy, or that you regret buying because of their high price.”
