Over the past few years and with the advancement in technology, many industries and businesses have embraced the concept of having all or some of their staff work remotely instead of from the office. This saves overhead costs and offers versatility to both the employer and the employee.

How Do Travel Agents Make Money?

The travel industry has experienced a dramatic increase in home-based travel agencies, as well as travel consultants working as external sales representatives on behalf of travel agencies. There are a number of retail travel companies whose business model caters exclusively to home-based travel agencies and travel consultants who work as outside representatives.

Rest assured, as the travel industry is regulated in Ontario, all home-based travel agencies must be registered with the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) and must follow legislative consumer protection provisions when selling travel. Anyone who sells travel services or someone who provides advice for the purpose of selling travel services must meet certain educational requirements and pass an examination before selling travel services on behalf of a registered Ontario travel agency. The exam tests the individual on the laws in Ontario that regulate the sale of travel services.

Regardless of where the transaction takes place, your travel agent is required by law to provide you with certain disclosures about the travel services you wish to purchase before you accept payment and complete the sale. This includes the total price of the travel services, the travel dates, and a fair and accurate description of the travel services to be provided, cancellation penalties, availability of insurance and what travel documents are required for each person traveling. The consultant is also required to provide you with a proper invoice detailing the travel purchase and indicating the payment received.

If you are ever unsure or want to confirm that an Ontario retail travel agency or website is properly registered, you can always ask or look up the TICO registration number.
