It is important to note that the HAR survey describes the income of self-employed advisors (any advisor who is not an employee of a travel agent.) In our 2022 survey, only 4% of advisors who responded to the HAR survey were the employees.

I’m going to throw you some industry lingo today. Are you ready? The self-employed category contains two main segments of advisors: hosted advisors (those who use another agency’s accreditation number, called a host agency) and independent accredited travel advisors ( people with their own travel accreditation).

Here’s the big picture you need to know about self-employed advisors. Over time, the number of self-employed advisors has grown exponentially, while the number of storefront travel agencies has decreased over time. In particular, hosted advisors and the host agencies that support them have become the leading path to bring new talent into the travel agent distribution channel.
Our annual Travel Agent Income Survey provides results in both the hosted and independently-accredited travel advisor segments. In our 2021, full-time hosted advisors with 3+ years of experience earned $24,982 on average and their independently-accredited counterparts earned $24,574.

When looking only at travel advisor employees, the HAR salary data is closer to what the BLS reports. In HAR’s 2022 survey, full-time travel agent employees earned $38,967.

Business Travel News (BTN) published a report on August 12, 2022 that profiled Travel Managers/Supervisors who work for corporate entities as in-house advisors (not working for a travel agency). The overall average salary for the corporate travel manager/supervisor position was registered at $114,955.

Previous HAR income and compensation survey reports offer information on what you can expect from a travel agent’s salary. But ultimately, it depends on a ton of factors. Not just by what type of advisor you are (which we cover here), but other factors like what type of travel you’re selling, sales experience, hours worked, and all that other fun stuff.
Although it is impossible to determine a uniform travel agent salary, one thing is consistent across all surveys, the majority of travel advisors are happy with a career rich in travel experience.
HAR’s 2022 Travel Advisor Survey indicated that 74% of full-time advisors are (at least) happy and satisfied with their income levels. 22% are “somewhat satisfied” and 4% are dissatisfied with income levels. And this is during the pandemic!!!
