Solo Travel: Everything You Need To Know About Traveling Alone

Even though a travel partner can be great, sometimes it can be difficult to find the perfect one. Sometimes, the average traveler is busy with work, a relationship, or another country on their bucket list. Whatever your reason for hitting the road alone, here are ten of the best solo travel spots in my books.

Since I live here, I may be biased, but Cambodia is one of my favorite countries to travel alone. Cambodian people are so warm that you never feel alone. It also has a comprehensive travel area that makes it easy to choose activities or places to stay where you can meet people you click with.

Start by visiting the Angkor Wat temples in Siem Reap town. If you prefer to take things easy on your own, ditch the bike and take a hike through the 12th-century ruins. Alternatively, join one of the hostel tours to learn about the temples and meet some Indiana Jones adventurers along the way. From Siem Reap, don’t miss Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh to learn about the country’s troubled history in the 1970s by visiting the fascinating museums,  S21 and the Killing Fields. The city is full of restaurants and cafes designed for solo travelers like you! Then get your water on by heading to the islands of Sihanoukville to enjoy beach parties, or to the Kampot River for a good coffee cruise. Security is not a major concern in Cambodia, however, and the confiscation of cellphones and wallets is on the rise, especially in Phnom Penh. Wear a backpack with both straps, keep your phone hidden when you’re walking down the street, and be aware of what’s happening around you.

The 10 Best Places For Solo Travellers To Find Love

Myanmar was my first big solo trip, so it’s high in my books. The world is happy that you’re removed from the well-worn Banana Pancake, but it’s gone far enough that you can meet a lot of friends, especially other solo travelers. People like to travel around Myanmar in circles. This means that you will often meet people who are walking the same path as you, which gives you the opportunity to be independent by knowing the path well. Myanmar has amazing temples and countless tours that you can experience on your own or with new friends.

Head to Myanmar’s most popular tourist destination, Bagan, where you can rent an electric bike (alone or with a group from your hostel) to explore over 2,000 temples and pagodas. You can also hop on a shared trail to visit the nearby Mount Popa, an extinct mountaintop monastery with 777 steps to climb and maybe even more monkeys to navigate. From Bagan you can go to Hsipaw or Kalaw which serves as a starting point for several day trips to explore Myanmar and rest in the lodges along the way. Tours are a great way to meet new travel buddies. And if you need time to show yourself? You can visit places like Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon or U Bein Bridge in Mandalay where crowds gather at sunrise and sunset. Both are magical places to explore on your own, although you can be invited to join your family for a snack together.

Personal safety is not a problem in Myanmar. Anyway, let me know what’s going on
