The Most Effective Ways To Study

If you forget new information as quickly as you hear it, even if you write it down, that’s because we tend to lose nearly 40 percent of new information within the first 24 hours after first reading or hearing it. If we keep records effectively, we can retain and retrieve almost 100% of the information we receive.

Are My Study Notes Too Comprehensive, Should I Be Writing More Or Less? I Haven’t Studied In Years So Unsure Of The Best Way To Go About It.

The most effective note-taking skills involve active rather than passive learning. Active learning puts the student in charge of learning. Research has shown that in order for learning to be effective, students need to engage in material they are interested in (reading, writing, discussing, problem solving).

They also need to think about the thinking involved in dealing with the material (metacognition). This means that when students learn content, they also need to think about how they will learn it. What is causing the confusion? How will your thinking about this topic change as you study? What helped you in learning this topic and what should you do next time? What didn’t work well to avoid a relearning error?

Research has shown that note-taking is most effective when notes are organized and varied in some way, or when the teacher provides examples of good notes. An effective logging strategy takes effort. Half the battle with students is helping them understand why they need to take their notes and communicate with them regularly.

Students often tell teachers that they have good memories and don’t need to take notes because they can easily recall the information. Research shows that this is not the case.

Teaching Styles: Different Teaching Methods & Strategies

The purpose of effective note-taking is to help you remember what you have learned and retain that information over time. German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus conducted the first experiments on memory and recall and span learning in 1895. He developed the forgetting curve, which shows how quickly information is lost over time if there is no strategy or effort to retain it.

If students interact (reread/discuss/write/participate) with their notes within 24 hours, the rate of forgetting is minimized. Repeating it a second time within a day for a shorter period of time restores the recall to 100%. Repeating it a third time in an even shorter period of time within a week will bring the recall back to 100%.

I teach using the Cornell Note-Taking System, which was developed in the 1950s as part of the University Preparation Program (AVID). Effective note-taking is interactive and involves using the original notes multiple times to build a memory of the content, rather than treating note-taking as a one-time copying activity. The important features of this system are illustrated in the following figures.

• Prepare a page for taking notes in the same way every time. A key question at the top of the page focuses the student on the main learning objective, which they should discuss after they leave the classroom.

• Divide the page into two columns, with the first column occupying one third of the page. The space to the left is for questions and notes that can be added later as students reflect on their notes. Space on the right is for the student to take notes from a lecture, textbook, lab experiment, video, audio, whatever the source is.

• Listen and record in their own words – rather than writing down verbatim, paraphrase what they hear so it makes sense to them.

• Brainstorm and collaborate with other students to check understanding and comprehension of each other’s notes.

• Tie all the learning together by writing a conclusion that answers the main question and answers the questions on the left. Note that summative is different from reflection, which focuses on the student’s response to the learning task or content.

• Learn from their notes by making regular time in your study schedule to review their notes on each topic
