Well, it came about because I got a few boxes of candy at a really low price and then had to figure out what to do with them. I thought about it briefly and then had a huge brain pop!

At first, I thought about giving each team 5 or so candies, but I decided that wasn’t going to work for me. So each team only gets one, but what to do with it? What if the students had to make something where the candy cane was a functional component.

My idea is basically to have each team have a tube of candy. The rod should be a functional part of the structure, not just decorative. So what can they build?
Aha! This is where I added a little twist. I made 6 task cards. Each card provides requirements for a different structure. I gave this randomly. Each team makes something different.
However, instead of preparing a box for each structure, I decided to leave it up to the teams.

You may have seen my other challenge where I use a budget. Students plan their designs and then “buy” materials from the STEM Mart. They must stay within budget.
Now, the easiest way I have to suggest you to display your materials is to use the boxes in the photo. For this challenge, I simply filled the boxes with some of each available material. These containers were outside for the students to see the materials. When students came to the STEM Mart to collect supplies, I could easily get what they requested.
First, teams were randomly assigned assignment cards. They were able to review the available materials.
Teams filled out a cost sheet and then brought the cost sheet to the STEM Mart to pick up their supplies.

I always check these lists. If the team asks for a lot of something, I sometimes get them to explain their idea. I do this so that they don’t waste materials, but also so that they don’t waste their fake money. Sometimes, groups think they have to spend all their money on their first visit to the STEM Mart. So I’ll give them a little help with that!
Now, one of the requirements is that the candy tube must be active. On the top of the guitar is the string adjuster. For a car, the pipe is a part of the steering mechanism. On the golf course, the stick is the golf club! And in drumming, the stick is one of the hooks that the drummer uses to put the drum on his shoulder!
Material tip: Take what you have on hand. We always use cardboard. It’s a good idea to pre-cut the pieces.

Tip: But the cheapest candies! I found the boxes at the dollar tree. And buy extras! The candy canes break easily and I replaced them when the handles broke during use.

I decided to use Skittles instead of M&Ms, but you could definitely use M&Ms for this activity (there’s a blank template on that page where you can customize any questions you want). do).
All you need to do is grab a sizeable bag of Skittles for your group and print out the question sheets (link at the bottom of the page) and you’re good to go.
I kept things pretty relaxed and told people they could enjoy their skittles as long as they kept at least 4 colors when it was their turn to ask questions (we only had time to go around the room twice. was).
And frankly, we forgot some people who forget and eat them all, and we just believed that they had the colors they chose to answer. It’s all in fun, right?!

We had one guy who played it safe and reached into his bag and randomly took out paint in turn.
I tried to make the people in the group feel comfortable with the activity in several ways.
First, I let each person get 2-3 bags of Skittles to make sure they get a good selection of colors.
I also tried to make sure there were plenty of questions that didn’t feel intimidating or overly personal.

As we did this activity, I made sure to comment on each person’s answer and draw more if it seemed appropriate. Our group learned a lot of interesting things and laughed a lot.
I used this activity in a church lesson. It was our first time meeting in over a year and I wanted our first time back to be lighthearted and have a chance to reconnect.

Be sure to give each group the same number of candy pumpkins and round toothpicks. Set the timer for as long as you want to give them. When the timer is up, have the students put their hands behind their heads. Walk around and measure each group’s tower. Any towers that fall over will be invalidated. The team with the highest tower wins.
Tie three strands of the same length to the rubber band. Give each group 6 cups and a rubber band. Explain to the students that they have to arrange the cups in a pyramid with three cups at the bottom, two in the middle and one at the top. They should not touch the cups with any part of their body. They can only use the device to maneuver the cup. The first group to build a pyramid wins.
Place pots near classroom walls or outside. Mark a line on the ground about 6-8 feet from the pot. Make sure each group has the same distance and the same number of balls. Have the students throw their tennis balls at the pot. The first group to successfully retrieve all of their tennis balls wins the challenge.

Of all the fun Halloween team building games for the classroom, this is my favorite because it only takes one supply, little time, and you can make it as easy or as hard as you like.
