Like most children, mine are looking forward to the end of the school year and the freedom that summer brings. Me on the other hand? I’ve been feeling more than a little nervous about what summer will be like this year.

Our family’s summers usually involve a lot of traveling, camping, and visiting national parks, friends, and family. When we are home, the children attend various summer camps and we visit the zoo, museums, playgrounds, cinemas and swimming pools. All of this seems likely to be out of the question this year due to the COVID19 pandemic.

Family to interact with others as I have a higher risk of COVID19. That means we’re probably looking at a long summer spent mostly home alone.

While I’ll be grateful to be done with some aspects of “distance learning,” I’ll admit that homeschool at least provides some general structure to our days. And while I certainly think it’s important to give kids plenty of free play time, I’ve also found that my kids tend to be happier and more cooperative when we have at least one small activity planned for each day. So I got the idea to stay at home for summer camp.

Starting the week of May 25th, I will have a weekly “camp theme” in my house – with crafts, activities, and things to read and watch that focus on each theme. Hopefully this will help provide both fun and structure to our flight, which should make things a little easier for me! And since I already spend time gathering ideas for my own family, I decided to share these ideas with other parents who might find them useful.

For each theme, I’ll provide a “menu” of options for you to choose from – with virtual resources and ideas for crafts and activities you can do with items you hopefully already have on hand. I try to keep it quite simple, but at the same time fun for the kids. You can follow the same theme that we do each week in our house, or you can go at your own pace – whatever works best for your family!
