Agents are responsible for all employment decisions relating to their employees. State Farm on Thursday said it plans to outsource some of its IT functions to an Indian IT services company.
An executive with HCLTech, the company State Farm hired to outsource its IT operations, says it promotes an “employee-first” culture and is taking steps to make Bloomington workers comfortable as they transition to their new employer.
Srinivasan Seshatri, corporate vice president and global head of financial services at HCLTech, said, “We have done this many times. “The integration process is something that’s done very, very seamlessly by our HR people and State Farm’s HR people. We want to make sure they’re as comfortable with the transition process as possible. It’s as seamless as possible.”
It’s not yet clear how many Bloomington-based employees will be affected by State Farm’s decision to outsource IT operations to HCLTech. State Farm said “several employees” will be offered jobs in similar roles at HCLTech, but “a small number of employees” will not. State Farm and HCLTech declined to release specific numbers.

In Thursday’s announcement, State Farm did not say it had made the decision to outsource, although it and other major insurers are facing financial pressures partly from an inflation-fueled slump in the auto insurance market and Hurricane Ian, which hit the U.S. fall
“That’s the idea,” said Seshatri. “When you mature processes, when you automate more, when you do things that increase customer satisfaction, remove friction, you save costs for customers in the long run.”
HCLTech plans to establish an “innovation center” — a physical location — in Bloomington within the next year, Seshatri said.
“Bloomington is a place that, if you had asked us five years ago if we were going to put a center in Bloomington, probably not. But we’ve been very successful building centers that anchor customers. For us, Bloomington becomes a great fit because of what we do at State Farm,” he said. .

“We want the current population to stay where they are for at least a little while, so there’s not a lot of change for them. But as we continue to expand and begin to finalize what the dynamics will be to deliver everything, Bloomington will become a physical hub with innovation,” he said. Seshatri said.
HCLTech is an Indian IT services company that started as a “garage startup” in 1976, Seshatri said. It has grown 20-fold in the past two decades and, in the early 2000s, became a pioneer in remote infrastructure management, he said. “We’re a $12 billion (company). But we still behave like a startup in many ways,” Seshatri said, calling State Farm an “aspirational account” for the company to succeed.
“This is a people business. People are at the heart and center of everything we do,” Seshatri said. “If your employees are happy, your customers will be very happy.”

HCLTech has 550 clients, including “50% of Fortune 500 companies,” and a “valued client list” that opens up opportunities for employees looking for career advancement, Seshatri said.

This is a bold direct-to-consumer move for State Farm, a company deeply rooted in selling and servicing policies through its network of agents. In fact, State Farm’s name barely appears on HiRoad’s website and app. You wouldn’t know it belonged to State Farm.
