The Sport and Recreation Graduate Certificate can also be advanced to a Master of Arts or Master of Arts Recreation and Leisure degree based on studies in the Department of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation.

Courses are instructor-led and offered online. They combine the best aspects of real-time learning (synchronous) guided by your instructor and independent independent learning (asynchronous) that can be achieved according to your schedule.
Students must complete a minimum of four courses, each with 3 credits, for a total of 12 credits. There are six courses to choose from. Courses are offered online only and students will have up to four years to complete the certificate.
The type and number of courses offered per calendar year will vary. All six scholarships cannot be awarded each year.
What Is Sports Management?
This course examines the concept and application of leadership in sport and recreation organizations from a theoretical and practical perspective. Students will gain an understanding of leadership theory through a series of asynchronous course modules that include reading, observation and practice. Students will apply these theoretical concepts during interactive online seminars where they will deal with ‘wicked leadership problems’ focusing on what to do, and how to do it. By the end of this course, students will have a thorough understanding of leadership concepts to apply in their leadership positions.

All Sport Insurance
The main interest of Dr. Soebbing focuses on the strategic behavior of sport and recreation organizations and their components. Within this research area, Dr. Soebbing examines issues related to sports equipment and events, decisions made by the leaders of organizations and their members, policies adopted / changed by sports and recreation organizations, and consumer behavior of sports and entertainment.
The course will examine current topics within the sports and entertainment environment from a variety of perspectives including economics, finance, sociology, management and ethics.
This course will explore key issues and issues related to facility and event management from a unique perspective of the sports and event management industry. Students will become familiar with key aspects of the operation and management of athletic and recreational facilities and events. The main topics to be discussed are feasibility analysis; facility planning, design and construction; event planning; advertising; budget; personnel management; performance monitoring and management; inheritance and consequences; and future trends.

This course is organized around a book (a free eBook through the U of A library) that takes a holistic approach to understanding and solving organizational problems. This general approach revolves around 4 frames. When we look at and analyze these 4 frames, we examine the organization as a whole but also groups and groups. This easy-to-read book provides many examples in all areas of business that we supplement in the classroom with sports and recreation activities to see how these lessons and topics apply to today’s sports industry and recreation. From our discussions, students will gain additional resources on how to solve many problems within organizations and gain insight into how to solve these problems. So, students who are interested and already pursuing a career in sport and recreation will get a lot of practical tools from this course. Students who may be pursuing a career outside of sports and recreation will also find practical help based on the book’s general nature and ability to apply concepts and ideas to many industries.
Emphasis is on the role of the federal, provincial and municipal governments in Canada in recreation, health, wellness and non-academic sports including interagency relationships between the public sector and sports. non-profit/voluntary and social service organizations.
Clara-Jane (CJ) Blye is a sports and entertainment enthusiast, bringing over 15 years of industry experience and an extensive research background. He is currently a senior PhD candidate at the University of Alberta in the Department of Kinesiology, Sports, and Recreation, and holds a Social Science Humanities Research Council Doctorate. Her research focuses on outdoor recreation policy, park management, environmental psychology, and connections with nature. He uses mixed methods in his research and is very focused on his work. Currently, she is looking at visitor recommendations and experiences of New Canadians visiting Elk Island National Park. His research has been published in top professional journals and he has presented research projects in Canada, America, Europe and Australia.
