By allowing the sun to shine, you can reduce the amount of stress placed on your furnace to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Similarly, by closing the curtains on a hot day, you can help reflect some of the sun’s hot rays and prevent your air conditioner from running after hours.

In fact, natural sunlight is one of the strategies often used in energy-efficient homes (such as Net-Zero Homes and Passive Houses), to save energy and reduce the need for more air conditioning.

There are currently a number of different discounts for home renovation improvements and energy efficiency upgrades in Ontario. To qualify for the Home Efficiency Rebate program, you must be a Union Gas or Enbridge Gas customer and must have had two energy audits performed by a certified service organization: one before the renovations begin and one after they are finished. A discount is also available to help cover the cost of required energy audits.

This allows you to target the areas of your home that need the most attention, and with as little initial cost as possible. Water was scarce in their villages and power outages were common throughout the state of Karnataka where they lived. To save water, they showered once a week. When the power went out, they studied by candlelight. Decades later, growing up in suburban Chicago, my parents nagged me to turn off the faucets while brushing my teeth and turn off the lights when I left the house. It was easy to take these things for granted.

Now that I’m an adult, their stories come to mind as I take care of my home and pay the bills. In my head I hear my mother’s voice: “Think of people when you use water or electricity,” she used to say. “Not everyone has access or money to afford these things.”
