Small groups are an important part of high quality early education. with. But what are small groups? How much should you have? And what should you teach your small groups? These are all good questions when it comes to planning effective group activities for your preschool, pre-k, or kindergarten classroom.

Small groups are a very effective teaching method that allows you to target your teaching to meet the needs and skills of each student in your class.

Easy Alphabet Activities For Preschoolers

Small group activities allow you to easily differentiate your students’ learning. The benefits of daily small group tutoring far outweigh those of whole group tutoring. By adding small group activities to your daily schedule, you’ll be able to help preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten students learn more.

Coordination is another important aspect of small group teaching. When you provide special support to help a child move to the next level of education, this is often called

Indication. In order to successfully facilitate the child, the teacher must understand the continuum of learning in each specific skill.

Ideally, small groups can include three to six children in each group. You can divide the students in your preschool class into several small groups, with three to six children in each group.

The number of groups you have will depend on how many children are in your class. For example, if you have a class of 20 Pre-K students, you might have four groups of five students, or two groups of four, and two groups of six. It is not important how many groups you have, but how you determine the students in each group.

Creating small groups is not a guessing game. A high-quality early childhood program uses assessment data to create small groups. Assessment is a tool that highly effective teachers use to help their students get from learning point A to point B. Teaching without assessment data is like driving a bus full of blind children.

The most effective assessment tools take the data you’ve collected and create small groups for you to eliminate any hidden biases you may have. My favorite rating tool is ESGI –

First, you’ll want to set aside space in your classroom for special small group time so your students know where to go when it’s their turn. I try to locate my small group away from the noisiest areas of the classroom, such as blocks and concerts. You can use a table for your small groups, or a carpet on the floor if you prefer.

Next, you’ll need a place for your small group’s supplies. You can prepare your small group materials every Friday for the next week so that they are ready when you come in on Monday morning. Colorful stools or baskets, a different color for each day of the week work well for storing small group items. You can also use colorful plastic shelves to organize your small items.

Small groups are more effective when you have them every day. Find a place in your daily schedule for small group learning. You don’t have to meet every team every day, just a certain time each day when you meet at least one or two teams.

When it comes to managing small groups, there are a few key pitfalls that you should try to avoid.

Disadvantage #1: While it may be tempting to divide the class and make one small group by yourself, with another adult (assistant or teacher) leading the other, it is not consistent with the purpose of small groups. One of the goals of small groups is to help children learn how to work independently.

Mistake #2: It’s easy to create your own groups based on traits and personalities and maintain them throughout the year, but this approach runs counter to small group best practices. Instead, your groups should be flexible and change as needed based on where your students are in their individual learning. We know that all young children learn at their own pace, so it makes sense that not all children are on the same learning path at the same time. This is why we assess students more than once during the school year, to see the progress they have made, and to determine what they are ready for next.

Disadvantage #3: Having small teams during midterms. If you try to take your small group lessons during your midterms you will be fighting an uphill battle. The attraction of the blocks and the drama center will be very strong and your small groups will not be successful if they compete with other centers. Instead, have more than one center time in your daily schedule if possible, one for small groups and independent work, and another for full centers.

Your small group time should resonate with your children, especially at the beginning of the school year. You may start the year with less than 10 minutes per group, but as your students begin to grow and develop, you may be able to gradually increase the time.

When you assess and group your students, it’s small group time! The most important thing is to choose hands-on activities that are engaging and fun. If your activities are not interactive and playful, then they will not be successful.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Theme For Your Preschool Classroom

Spring is an exciting time of year, especially for preschoolers. There are many interesting topics that they want to learn about. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of spring is the unpredictable weather. The forecast can have warm sunny days, snow, and rain – all in one week! Or does that happen where I live now?!

In addition to the weather, spring is a great time for preschoolers to learn how plants grow, flowers, the life cycle of frogs, bees and pollinators, baby animals, bugs, the life cycle of butterflies, rainbows, and more. . In my opinion, it’s the best time of year to learn about the great outdoors. And all
