A Year of Play is a simple e-book filled with a year’s worth of playful learning activities. It’s for kids ages 2-6 and includes a 12-month calendar and 48-week activity plan! Can you see the sunshine? I do too. Between the first day of spring and the last day of school, my heart longs for outdoor activities for kids. Of course, I am a child of the 80s. Opening the garage door and asking the kids to come back by sundown has many benefits.

But the truth is, days with toddlers and preschoolers aren’t easy. I remember wondering how we would manage to sleep when you had kids.

The days were long. As much as I enjoyed my time with them, I also had to find a way to go out and look at a book I couldn’t or wouldn’t read from a folding chair.

Toddlers and preschoolers need a little help finding tools to start playing outside. But they do it once – MAGIC. Here are 50 outdoor activities for kids!

Another easy and light (I couldn’t help myself) outdoor activity is rock painting. Some days we need to go to the rock. The next step is to paint them. Or if you like sensory play, try Bear Soup Sensory Play. How can I repay the joy these bears brought to my children?! They are a favorite so far – I still have my eight year old playing with them. Bring the bears to the outdoor water tank. Bear soup? Don’t mind if I do!

You know what else I tried? Bringing indoor toys outside is a big hit. I did this for Outdoor Tracks Water Play. The boys tried racing cars and tried to put them in buckets of water. (Always supervise young children around water).

Of course, I couldn’t talk about “Musical Scavenger Hunt”. A musical scavenger hunt is a great way to get outside and get moving. Play your favorite song. When it stops – run and grab something from the stopped dream. It’s great fun for all ages.

If you want to add exterior math, use shapes and shaving cream. We took out our 3D shapes and created new sculptures. It’s a great morning activity outside before the sun gets too hot. When it warms up, hose down anything (and everything).

If shaving cream is your jam, then try shaving cream puppies. These sensory litter kids bury puppies and clean them with a spray bottle.

If your child misses shaving cream (but who does?!) and wants some extra sensory fun, try Nature Murals. This is a two-step outdoor activity. First collect the items outside. Next, glue them to a large piece of wood or cardboard. A fun way to strengthen little hands, practice gluing and combine creativity.

One of my fall favorites is the Pumpkin Balance. Can you balance the mini pumpkin on your head? It’s more complicated than it sounds, but it makes us all laugh out loud when it takes time before dinner is ready.

I can’t even mention pumpkins without adding leaf coloring. I use butcher paper from home improvement stores for exterior paint. Put what your child likes, and the rest is up to him. Let your toddler and preschooler mix colors while coloring.
