At 89, Ruby Curry has been visiting the Tyler Senior Center almost every day for the past 15 years.
“It was always fun to come; it was always fun to play games. Right now I’m doing my favorite thing, which is puzzles. I enjoy crocheting class when we crochet,” Curry said.
Another of her favorite things about the senior center is the staff, who she said always made her feel welcome when she walked through the door. She also recommends the senior center to others.
A hidden gem of Tyler, the senior center offers a variety of classes, activities, programs and resources for seniors in the community who are 55 and older. The free establishment also provides free lunches for members every day.

From line dancing, jamming, bingo, arts and crafts and a coffee club, to educational programs, the Tyler Senior Center aims to educate seniors on how to make better decisions, such as health and finances.
“We’re very happy and fortunate to have this facility and to be open right now,” said Laura Wilkerson, supervisor at the senior center.
Upon arriving at the Tyler Senior Center for the first time, the senior will be given a registration form to fill out, asking for basic information such as an emergency contact. There is no fee and no ID is required.
After registration, seniors will receive a key fob that will allow them to enter the building during business hours. The fob system also allows senior center administrators to keep track of who is in the building.

The senior center also serves seniors a free meal each day from Meals on Wheels if they are 65 or older. Elderly people are allowed to eat in the facility or take food home with them.
Wilkerson said most visitors who are at the facility typically visit for about an hour a day and do some activity. Although new to her position, Wilkerson said she is finding out what seniors like to do so she can eventually offer similar activities at the senior center.
The senior center features board games, a pool room for playing pool, a computer lab, pianos, a library, a puzzle room, an oil paint art room, a sewing room with yarn and supplies, and a craft room. There is also a large cafeteria and kitchen and a common area with a TV. There are about six activities that seniors can participate in every day.
The senior center was closed for more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but reopened in August. Wilkerson said the facility is following COVID-19 guidelines.

“We cannot mandate them, but we encourage the wearing of masks, we disinfect wherever we can.” We wear gloves and social distance, in exercise classes, everyone spreads around and when they eat dinner,” Wilkerson said.
She also emphasized that although many seniors are vaccinated, they need a stipend after being isolated and protected.
“Because they couldn’t communicate with each other, it was difficult for them and now they are very excited to be back together and to be able to do things together,” Wilkerson said.
Wilkerson also organized themed days, such as Crazy Socks Day, just for fun. The staff at the senior center is working on putting together a cookbook that will feature every senior’s favorite family recipe. The staff also organizes a birthday party once a month to celebrate each senior’s birthday during the month.

“First and foremost, interaction with other people – I think we all need that interaction.” I think going through COVID-19 showed us how much we need each other and a support system,” she said, adding that most seniors bond with each other.
The camaraderie is also another reason Wilkerson said seniors enjoy their time at the center. Exercise, socialization, and hobbies are all things that seniors enjoy. Seniors can also participate in occasional field trips, such as the East Texas State Fair.
The senior center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Seniors attending a senior center must be self-sufficient. It is located at 1915 Garden Valley Road in Tyler. For information, call (903) 597-0781.

According to the center’s executive director, Wendy Brandenburg, they provide these meals where seniors can come into the building to eat and enjoy a hot meal, Monday through Friday.
From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., these group meals are available to anyone in the community over the age of 60.
“In addition, we have activities that promote togetherness, socialization and communication among the elderly population,” says Brandenburg. “We offer different classes like exercise classes, craft classes, reading library, essential oils class. Every Friday we also have gospel music.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Texas’ elderly population, people 60 and older, continues to grow, but participation in the community meal program is declining.
“One of the main reasons we do what we do is to ensure a healthy meal they can count on every day.” “Sometimes this may be the only hot cooked meal that some of our people get,” says Brandenburg.
Brandenburg explains that nutrition and well-balanced meals are so important for senior citizens because they need to maintain strength.
“We provide a good, nutritious meal.” We have vegetables and some meat. Everything is shared and we follow the dietary guidelines given to us to make sure they have it.”
