Many people think of volunteers as helpers who stop by in their spare time to answer phones, organize files, or visit people who are sick or homebound. Volunteers fulfill a key role at the Center, handling day-to-day tasks and fundraising. Without them, the Center would not be able to do the work we have been doing for over 40 years.

The committee acts on behalf of senior residents and visitors 60 and older at Law Harrington Senior Living Center. The committee is responsible for addressing the volunteer needs of our seniors and seeks to develop programs for senior citizens that will improve their quality of life; develop and implement programs for them that cover nutritional, educational, recreational and social needs.
Overview: As a member of the Law Harrington Senior Living Center Volunteer Activities Committee, you will work with the Montrose Center Volunteer Department staff to ensure the establishment of a robust, vibrant and dedicated volunteer community. From helping organize the center’s program volunteer needs, supporting ongoing training efforts, and continuing to assist in the Center’s recruitment efforts, the volunteer community plays a vital role in the Montrose Center’s mission to strengthen Houston’s LGBTQ+ community. Our committee members are ambassadors for our Senior Center volunteers.

A Cleburne man traveling to Houston for training this weekend thought he would make his trip more meaningful by collecting and delivering funds to help victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Brett Lucas was preparing to join men from parishes across the country for a weekend of prayer, study and reflection at Instituted Acolytes for the Ordinariate in Houston.

Scrolling through social media posts recently, Lucas noticed that a church in Houston with a similar name to his in Cleburne was looking for items to donate.
“Our church members have donated to great organizations to help those along the coast, but it’s also nice to donate hand in hand,” he said. “Many people have a very long recovery period ahead of them and it is important to support them for the long haul as well. St. John Vianney here in Cleburne gathered with me to quickly collect some relief supplies before my departure for Houston.”
In just a few days, Lucas was able to assemble a truckload of cleaning supplies and household items to take with him on his trip.
The Houston church has a food bank, as well as hosts Federal Emergency Management Agency offices and volunteer crews to help clean up their neighborhood.
Cleburne Man Heads To Houston With Relief Supplies
Troy Gately, a pastor in SW Houston, said the hurricane and flooding dramatically affected their entire parish.
“We are struggling to get back on our feet,” he said. “Thank God, we have had no reported loss of life, but many are suffering a lot. With many of our staff, parish leaders and volunteers victims of flooding or having to evacuate, our efforts to mobilize relief efforts have been hampered. “Instead of giving help, we were getting help.”
Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton sent a letter to President Donald Trump on Wednesday urging him to make sure churches and religious groups are not forgotten as the federal government allocates disaster relief funds.
In a three-page letter to the president, Abbott and Paxton laid out their case that Trump has the discretion to include churches on the list of private nonprofit groups eligible to receive FEMA disaster relief funds after Hurricane Harvey.

They claimed that many churches and houses of worship had been transformed into evacuee shelters and aid distribution centers.
“And many of these churches—as well as thousands of other structures in the area—suffered damage from the hurricane,” the letter said.
The pitch from the governor and attorney general comes two days after legislation made houses of worship eligible for FEMA disaster assistance.
The Stafford Act, signed into law in 1988, dictates which facilities could receive federal disaster relief funding and leaves out churches and other places of worship.

Under federal law, eligible nonprofits include facilities that “provide essential services of a governmental nature to the general public,” such as museums, zoos, performing arts facilities, libraries, homeless shelters, senior centers and other facilities. The law adds that the president can define facilities that provide essential services of a governmental nature to the public.

It’s just after lunch on a December afternoon at the Homewood Health Campus, and residents of this Lebanon, Indiana assisted care facility are heading toward a common living room furnished with comfortable, overstuffed sofas and chairs. A row of 20 to 30 small Christmas trees form an L-shape on either side of the room, where a few dozen seniors gather around a banner of classical indie music and four empty chairs.
They are a patient audience, watching one of the first snowfalls of winter as they wait. Suddenly, the front doors open, allowing a gust of cold air—and youth—to blow through the room. With instruments in tow, four professional musicians walk to the empty chairs and set up for a concert.

An ad hoc string quartet will play for an hour, performing classical music along with Christmas tunes. It’s just one of many concerts in an ongoing senior series put on by Classical Music Indy as part of the Music Unites program. The quartet is drawn from a group of carefully selected musicians invited to perform. Their mission is to bring classical music to residents in assisted care, memory care and rehabilitation centers in central Indiana.
“When I choose music for our ensembles, I usually choose well-known classical tunes that people will know, like the part of Bach that is in popular culture,” says Bethany Daugherty, violinist at Indy Classical Music. “If people aren’t familiar with classical music, it gives them something to latch on to.” We also use hymns, which are a really great way for people to connect with music.”
Daugherty is convinced that the music they share makes a significant difference for seniors. “I grew up in a family where we all played instruments and went around performing for nursing homes and churches, so it’s something I’ve always done,” she says. “I really love the opportunity to bring music into senior communities.” The concerts are an opportunity to continue a family tradition and honor her grandmother, a former Homewood Health Campus resident, who loved music.
Daugherty says she usually leaves feeling refreshed. Judging by the reactions of the audience and the conversations they share with the musicians afterward, the feeling is mutual. “It’s a breath of fresh air to have music of this caliber brought to us,” said Jim P., 84, a retired farmer and World War II veteran who enjoyed piano lessons as a child.
