Richmond Parks And Recreation Department – RICHMOND, Ind. — If the city’s parks department can raise $15,000 by Nov. 21, it will receive the matching amount from state programs and be able to use the Starr-Gennett building year-round.
Richmond Parks and Recreation wants to winterize the facility. This will make the site an instant new home for the winter farmers market. But it also means the department can rent the building for events during the colder months.

“The new Winter Market location is more than just a space to host a market. It’s a destination to visit every Saturday and be able to extend our season at this location with weddings, holiday parties, corporate events, dances, galas and more for years to come. years,” Parkes Superintendent Denise Retz said in a statement.

If the parks department hits its fundraising goals, it plans to outfit the building with heaters, plastic curtains that reflect local history and other improvements.
The matching grant will come from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Agency’s Creating Places program, which is in partnership with online crowdfunding site Patronicity.
In recent years, the parks department has used the same matching grant program to pay for projects such as Clear Creek and Starr Parks and a new playground at Middlefork Reservoir.

A Day In The Richmond Parks
“This project transforms a historic space to provide access to food at this most critical time of year,” Patronicity director Bridget Anderson said in a statement. Through crowdfunding, the project will capture community energy and enthusiasm to ensure food security and a sense of belonging in winter. “
The Winter Farmers Market was previously held at the Richmond Senior Community Center, but it has outgrown the facility, especially given COVID-19 safety requirements.
Several options for the new winter residence were considered, including the possibility of keeping the market in its summer location, Jack Elstro Plaza, and purchasing a large tent that could be heated.
However, that option proved to be too costly, and efforts to secure grants to help cover the costs were unsuccessful.

“We have explored every opportunity and option available to ensure that all of our farmers, artisans and other vendors find the best locations,” Caleb Smith, market coordinator for the Richmond Farmers Market, said in a statement. “
“In doing our due diligence and research to find a new, safe location for our winter market, we felt the most important considerations should be the availability of food in our urban centres, and locations where it can be safely provided during this pandemic. “

The first winter market of the season will be open from 10am to 1pm. November 7 at the Starr-Gennett Building, 101 S. First St.
