Recreation Uss Arizona – A drone company called Deep Trekker recently took one of its small machines underwater to map and document the wreck of the USS Arizona in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The footage is especially fascinating considering that the wreckage is also the grave of some 900 souls who fought back against the attacking Japanese forces on December 7, 1941.

The Pearl Harbor Memorial Is Littered With Errors. This Navy Vet Is Trying To Get Them Fixed

The battleship is still submerged in Honolulu’s shallow harbor, long considered too damaged and too much of a monument to ever be salvaged. The official memorial site for the Pearl Harbor attacks brings thousands of visitors every year. Oil seeping from the wreckage can still be seen decades later.

The survivors of the attack sometimes have their families scatter their ashes at the site so that they can rest with their fallen brothers.

As the Deep Trekker press release notes, the interior is a dangerous maze of obstacles, hazards, and very small corridors that are impossible for human divers to explore. Deep Trekker’s small underwater drone was able to go inside to record high-definition video.

One of the reasons for the renewed research is finding ways to keep the memorial site intact for future generations.

“The National Park Service along with a team from companies like Etrac, Autodesk and others are striving to develop a basic benchmarking model to understand how the steel ship continues to change as it rests in the saltwater of Hawaii. The mission is important to ensure that this active burial site remains an intact memorial for years to come.” A Deep Trekker spokesperson explains in a press release.
