OXFORD — The University of Mississippi is poised to open the doors to a new state-of-the-art campus recreation facility that will greatly enhance the exercise and wellness services available to students, faculty, staff, alumni and the LOU community.

The South Campus Recreation Center will provide nearly 100,000 square feet of training space, including a large functional training area, an indoor climbing wall, a 25,000 square foot fitness room, fitness studios, basketball courts, a multi-activity court and other amenities. . The facility is located on the former Whirlpool property off Chucky Mullins Drive south of Mississippi Highway 6.
Kennedy Recreation Center
The recreation center, which will officially open on August 26, will feature services for wellness education, outdoor programming and personal training. Adjacent to the facility will be two fields for indoor sports, sports clubs and casual recreation, and a sidewalk will connect the building to the South Campus Rail Trail.

The impact of the South Campus Recreation Center will be felt throughout the community, said Campus Recreation Director Pēteris Tulčinskis.
“We really had to meet the demand of our growing student population, and I think the new features will attract some people in the community just because there won’t be anything like it in Oxford,” Tulczynski said. “The impact that recreation has on attracting and retaining students is huge.

Enrollment has more than doubled since the university’s existing recreation center, the Turner Center, opened in 1983, and the facility simply isn’t big enough for the demand, he said. The Turner Center will remain open, and both facilities will offer recreational and wellness services to students, faculty, staff and the community.
The South Campus Recreation Center will house the William Magee Center for Wellness Education, named for UM alumnus William Magee, who died of an accidental overdose after graduation. His parents, David and Kent Magee of Oxford, made it their mission to help Ole Miss students dealing with their own problems with mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse.

The William Magee Center, which opens Sept. 6, is located near the main entrance to the South Campus Recreation Center and will offer a variety of services to promote student wellness.
“The William Magee Center will be right there, front and center, in the main entrance,” Tulczynski said. “Students will have to pass it when they enter the building. I think it will bring a lot more attention to wellness services as well as the well-being of our students.
In addition to focusing on education and support for students with addiction issues, the center will also offer resources to help with all aspects of student well-being, Tulcinski said.
“We’re going to educate them about how things like exercise can affect academic performance,” he said. “And there’s an element of healthy decision-making and other factors that we educate students about that can affect their success on campus and in school.”

The recreation center will house the administrative offices of both the Campus Recreation Department and the Parking and Transportation Services Department. The $32 million recreation center has been years in the making. The facility is located in a former Whirlpool property warehouse.
Tulczynski said the building offers a variety of spaces, some large and some small, that provide a communal atmosphere that he believes will encourage community building and interaction.

“You can stand in one spot and see people on the track or on the cardio machines or playing basketball and on the climbing wall,” he said. “The openness of the space will maybe open the eyes of people who say, ‘Hey, this looks fun.’ maybe I should try it.”
“I think this facility will provide a facility that doesn’t exist within a 45-minute radius of Oxford,” Tulczynski said. “I think the equipment and programming we have in the building will make it a one-stop shop for fitness-related services.”

“It’s a lot of fun just to walk in. The facility sells itself, it’s beautiful,” Hackney said. “I tell people all the time, if you can’t find something, we’ll find something for you.”

This summer, the facility is offering camps for children 14 and under. The facility is offering sports, STEM, traditional and splash camps this summer. Places are still available for sessions starting June 20th and running through August.
