The county is about to begin construction of the first public gymnasium at Cross Creek Park in New Tampa, adjacent to Pride Elementary and just off Kinnan St., according to the commissioner.

While New Tampa has a YMCA (which requires a membership to use) and the New Tampa Recreation Center (which is adapted for dance and gymnastics), there is no indoor gym or recreation center that caters for basketball, volleyball and pickleball players, to name a few. some sports that Hagan envisions being played in the new facility.
“We have the Y, we have some school gyms and the city has the gymnastics center, but this will be the first gym open to the public,” Hagan says. “It will fill a much-needed void that exists in New Tampa.”
The facility will be modeled after the other gyms built around the county, and Hagan says it will likely be compared to the Northdale Park & Recreation Center in Carrollwood. It will include multi-purpose indoor courts and meeting rooms.
Currently, Cross Creek Park has a playground, a small pavilion area, two basketball courts that are showing their age, and two baseball fields that have not been maintained in years – the ground on the fields is mostly overgrown with grass. There are no bathrooms (one portable potty, sometimes two, fills that need) or water fountains. However, it remains popular on the weekends.

Hagan says he has secured $1.5 million for the project, and is eyeing the rest of the funding to come from the American Recovery Plan Act (ARPA) federal funding. Hillsborough County received $285 million from the federal program.
“I expect it to be fully funded this year and ideal to break ground in the summer or fall,” he said.
The county could begin community outreach and virtual public meetings about the project sometime this month or next. Every day of the school year, starting around 5:00 p.m. after classes let out for the day, hundreds of basketball games are played at Dixon Recreation and McAlexander Fieldhouse. Unlike intramural basketball leagues hosted by Sports Programs, there are no referees in these pickup games. There are no officials to judge match violations or keep time and score. Pick-up basketball is based on the honor system, and when a player is fouled, it is their responsibility to call it.
Competition remains strong, says JJ Mears, a freshman. “These pick-up games are just as competitive as my games were in high school,” he said. “Of course the teams are not that well organized, but people definitely want to win.” For Mears, picking up basketball games at Dixon allows him and his friends to continue playing competitive basketball even in college.

Dixon’s basketball courts are stratified by difficulty level, and there is usually a game for each level of competition. On the lower courts near Dixon’s east entrance, next to badminton and table tennis – players can be found shooting and practicing competitive half-court battles. On the upper courts—especially the ones closest to the windows overlooking the west entrance—fast, aggressive basketball reigns supreme.
The popularity of the late-night basketball scene at Dixon drives its competitiveness. Most weeknights it is difficult to find an available court. When questions form, it is an unspoken norm that the winning team will play the next game, replacing the loser.
During the winter term, when the weather turns ugly and the IM Basketball League takes place, space and time are limited, players practice more, and — as a result — competition soars, said Clinton Douglas, a senior studying civil engineering. Part of this increase, he says, is due to the end of the football season. Football players want to stay active over the offseason. “I just come here to hope, and that’s about it,” he says.
Most people play pickup basketball at Rec Sports to relax from classes, work and life. “It gives me a chance to get my mind off things,” says Mears. “The stress reliever, pure and simple.” For other members of the Rec Sports community, pick-up basketball is a chance to engage in physical activity in a social setting. Esau Ibarra, a senior studying public health, can be found most nights either studying or playing basketball. Ibarra shared, “I absolutely made friends through picking up basketball.”

While it’s somewhat rare for players to spend time with each other outside of Dixon, it’s clear the camaraderie is genuine once it’s courtside. “I know most of the guys who play regularly on a name-by-name basis,” Ibarra says. “I’ve been coming here for a long time, and those I don’t know personally, I still recognize their faces.”
