Unlike Intramural Basketball leagues put on by the Sports Program, there are no referees in these pick-up games. There are no officials to punish game violations or keep time and score. Pick-up basketball is based on the honor system, and if a player has fouled, it is their responsibility to call it back.
The competition remains strong, freshman JJ Mears said. “These pick-up games are just as competitive as my games in high school,” he said. “Obviously the team is not very organized, but people definitely want to win.” For Mears, pick-up basketball games at Dixon allowed him and his friends to continue playing competitive basketball, even in college.

Dixon’s basketball court is stratified by difficulty, and there are usually games for each level of competition. In the lower court near Dixon’s east entrance, adjacent to badminton and ping pong – players can be found practicing shooting and competing in half court scrimmages. On the upper court – especially the one closest to the windows facing the western entrance – the basketball is aggressive as fast as possible.

The popularity of the late-night basketball scene in Dixon fueled its competitiveness. Most weekday nights, it is difficult to find available courts. When ques form, it is an unspoken norm that the winning team will play the next game, and the loser will replace out.
During the winter, when the weather turns ugly, and the IM Basketball league takes place, space and time are limited, players practice more, and — as a result — the competition skyrockets, said Clinton Douglas, a senior studying civil engineering. Part of this uptick, he says, is due to the football season ending. Football players want to stay active in the offseason. “I just came here to hoop, and that’s about it,” she said.
Many people play pick-up basketball at Rec Sports to unwind from classes, work, and life. “It offered me a chance to get my mind off it,” Mears said. “Relieve stress, pure and simple.” For other members of the Rec Sports community, pick-up basketball is an opportunity to engage in physical activity in a social environment. Esau Ibarra, a senior studying public health, can be found either studying or playing pick-up basketball most nights. Ibarra shared, “I really made friends through pick-up basketball.”
The community around pick-up basketball is unique. While it was quite rare for the players to spend time with each other outside of Dixon, once courtside it was obvious the genuine camaraderie. “I know most of the guys who play regularly in the name by name,” says Ibarra. “I’ve been coming here for a long time, and people I don’t know personally I still recognize their faces.”
