Picnic Time For Teddy Bears

Picnic Time For Teddy Bears – During the early 1900s, President Theodore Roosevelt was in office as President of the United States. While hunting in Mississippi in 1902, he refused to shoot a small bear. The Washington Post picked up on this story, and made a cartoon of the event. Toy store owners, Morris and Rose Michtom, wrote to President Roosevelt to allow them to call their stuffed animals “Teddy Bears”. Teddy became very popular. “Teddy Roosevelt’s grandson, Kermit, gave the original teddy bear, from 1903, to the Smithsonian. That bear is in the collections of our National Museum of American History today.”

Demand peaked in 1988 when collectables dealer Royal Selangor launched Bears’ Picnic Day. Many people bought the collectibles and started giving them as birthday gifts. Soon, children’s birthday parties began with “Picnic Teddy Bears” themes. Eventually, this particular theme became so popular among parents, preschools and kindergarten classes, that parents and institutions came together to name the event as a holiday.
