All newly hired employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or receive approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date . The parks are operated by people – lots of them in the summer. The city currently has over 1,000 open jobs. This job fair will highlight jobs in the Parks and Recreation Department.
Amid a citywide job vacancy crisis, the city is hosting a career and job fair this week to highlight job openings in parks and recreation and other departments.
San Diego is the region’s eighth largest employer with more than 11,000 employees. The number of openings in the city has topped 1,000 since the COVID-19 pandemic shook labor markets, according to officials.
The mayor, Parks and Rec Director Andy Fields and representatives from about a dozen city departments will attend the fair, which is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays at the Balboa Park Club, 2144 Pan American Rd.

The fair will feature live music, light refreshments and raffles. Current City employees will also be on hand to talk with attendees about their jobs and help with the application process in English and Spanish.
Marisol Aguilar, volunteer and internship coordinator at Parks and Rec, says meeting current employees can go beyond just helping out at the fair.
“They may have a mentor within the city of San Diego – who is already in a position that they are probably hoping to work for or are trying to be – who can assist them and guide them through any can answer the question,” he said.
Aguilar said it was the second city job fair, with more than 100 candidates attending the one this summer. The city hopes to make the fair a quarterly event.

Opportunities range from full- and part-time positions for anyone 15-and-a-half or older, along with internships for anyone 13 and older.
Aguilar said the city’s Employ and Empower paid internship program aims to onboard 1,000 interns within the next two years.
He said that this gives people a chance to climb the ladder. She did just that, starting in the city at age 16 with a summer job as a pool lifeguard. “There’s a lot of opportunity for growth,” she said.
