(WABC) — Three workers at a Queens nursing home have been arrested for allegedly abusing patients. Authorities say the abuse happened at Peninsula Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Beach Channel Drive in Far Rockaway. Two nurses and a nurse’s aide were caught on camera by the facility’s surveillance system mistreating patients or doing nothing to help. In one instance, a nurse is seen dragging a frail 51-year-old man to the floor by his arms. The patient is bleeding and in obvious pain, and other nurses stand around and watch.
Video shows alleged abuse at Queens nursing home “My office will not tolerate nurses who fail to treat or endanger injured patients in their care,” Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said. “Caregivers must know that we will vigorously prosecute behavior that endangers our most vulnerable citizens. New Yorkers deserve quality care in nursing facilities and their loved ones deserve to know their caregivers treat them like professionals.” In another video, the male patient is seen crawling on the floor, apparently bleeding from the neck or hands. Other nurses are seen standing by, doing nothing.
Raw video of alleged abuse at Peninsula Queens Nursing Center management turned the video over to law enforcement, and all three defendants were either fired or resigned. Three health workers surrendered to the authorities on Wednesday morning. The suspects are nurses Funmilola Taiyo, 34, and Esohe Agbonkpolor, 39, and 36-year-old accomplice Emmanuel Ifte. All three are charged with endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person and willful violation of the Health Act. All of them are state registered health workers. According to the state health department, 112 complaints have been filed against nursing homes since 2011, double the statewide average. Inspections found 79 deficiencies, double the statewide average. And in 2005, the home was fined $2,000 for an unspecified standard of care violation. The victim was not identified and his family could not be reached for comment. Here are more details on the alleged incident, attributed to the Attorney General’s Office All of these details the complaint: On October 23, 2014, both Taio and Agbankpolor were working as nurses at Peninsula Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and Uft was working as a certified nurse’s aide. That evening, the 51-year-old resident, who suffered from multiple debilitating conditions, including altered mental status, collapsed in front of Agbankpolar while in a hallway at Peninsula. After leaving the resident on his back on the floor for 12 minutes, Uft grabbed the injured resident by the arm and dragged him down the hallway to his room. About 25 minutes later, the resident, wearing only a backless gown that was pulled over her waste, emerged from her room, crawling along the floor on her back, bleeding profusely from a wound on the back of her head and another severe wound to her jaw. on For the next 20 minutes, Taio and Agbonkpolor, working only a few feet away, mostly ignored the resident and did not properly treat the resident’s wounds, including not attempting to stop the bleeding from his head and neck wounds. Instead, Uft, in another attempt to get the resident back to her room, allegedly grabbed the resident by her hospital gown, which by then was wrapped around her neck, and dragged her along the floor, dropping her abruptly in front of her room. Elliott Norman, administrator of Peninsula Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Cardiff Bay Center LLC, released a statement saying, “Peninsula Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has zero tolerance for any misconduct, abusive or negligent behavior by staff toward patients.
