To build our baffle, I first went shopping at our Seattle Goodwill. I looked for anything that I thought would make interesting sounds (for the wand itself) and for interesting and unusual items that we could use as “drumsticks”. I ended up buying two types of strainers, a cream (tea) dispenser, a fish and a clover gelatin mold, part of a grill, a drying stand, a bell and a pot lid. The awesome rusted crow was actually left behind by the previous owners of our home and he’s the perfect addition there in the top right corner.

I also picked up some odd-shaped whisks, some interesting large spoons, and a potato masher for, well, whipping. 🙂 I keep these loose items in a clear plastic shower tray (the tray keeps them organized, but the holes in the shower tray don’t allow for water to collect).

After purchasing all of the items, I laid them out to determine the size of the wall I wanted to make. We decided on a single 2 x 12 piece of wood and had Home Depot cut it to the length we wanted / our space could accommodate it. We bolted this piece of wood to two 4 x 4 columns, which we also had cut to size on site. The pillars are 1/3 buried in the ground (you can just dig a big hole and once you have the wall where you want it, use a spirit level and then add gravel to “settle” the pillars before adding soil ), and we decided the height was based on the size of S at the time (we built this over a year ago and chose a height that it could reach at the time, but would also grow with it).
I attached most items with the same hooks I used to mount X’s texture circles for his sensory board, although some items required screws. I’ve tried hanging them in such a way that the most varied of noises are produced. For example, you can see that the broiler platter S that is “playing” is partially on and partially off the platter so she can study how this affects the sound it produces. I love that we were able to build a wall long enough for multiple kids to make “music” at the same time (like they do when S has a lot of friends).

Of The Best Math Activities For Preschoolers
I thought it would be fun to draw a large piano keyboard out of chalk for my kids to play with. Maybe teach them some music-related concepts. Maybe burn off some excess energy by turning it into a hopscotch style game. Get outside and enjoy the warm weather. such.
I was originally going to leave this chalk keyboard blank with no letters, but I quickly learned that my boys are more likely to enjoy the activity when they simply add letters or even numbers to a craft or activity. That was before I knew what hyperlexia was, by the way. But now it all makes sense as to why that is.
Well, this outdoor music activity for kids ended up being a great way to sneak into gross motor play, music learning, and letter play. Among many other things.

To give you a better sense of how we did this activity, here are some pictures of my kids learning about music. As I mentioned, one of the first things I did was label all the keys on the piano with the musical alphabet. So my kids took some time to say the musical alphabet.
My eldest son, J, practiced jumping on the keyboard by finding the letters I called out, like “A through C,” and putting a foot on each note. Then he proceeded to jump from note to note.
