Outdoor Golf Games For Adults – With the 4th of July just around the corner, the family reunion season is in full swing, with many families enjoying outdoor games. Maybe horseshoes, croquet, ping pong, lawn bowling, bocce ball, badminton, cornhole, or ladder golf?! We were first introduced to Ladder Golf (15 month old Big Brother in the pictures 😉 ) at a family reunion in Nebraska about 4 years ago!
So, as a Lowe’s Creative Ideas blogger given summer creative challenges that revolve around the great outdoors, we thought it would be great to make our own patriotic style ladder golf game! For those unfamiliar, ladder golf is a toss game in which you toss tethered balls (called bolas) into a ladder-type structure, attempting to land your ball on one of 3 horizontal bars.
Outdoor Golf Games For Adults
To create the ladder frame, you will need a fair bit of PVC (we used 3/4″ diameter). We had nine 2-foot pieces, six 1-foot pieces, six standard tee fittings, and six elbows (or standard 90 joints). It was a pleasure buying it from Lowe’s because we cut all our PVC pieces in-house. It made things so much easier when we got home! Assembly is a breeze. You create a base and then use the pieces to build a ladder structure. If you want an extra-sturdy structure, you can glue everything together. But we found that everything fits together well, and we like the option to disassemble it for easy storage.

Now, at this point, you can complete your ladder golf “goal” & have it all white. But we decided we wanted something with some color (so we waited to assemble and paint first). Your options are limitless, but we decided to go patriotic with red, white and blue. PVC spray painting was easy. We even found some Valspar spray paint made specifically for plastic (that’s red). It continued brilliantly. Sadly, they didn’t have blue in the plastic item in our store. So, we got a premium Valspar can in blue. It also worked well, just not as well as the red. After the paint is all dry, you can assemble the ladder golf goal. We noticed that the pieces were much tighter after painting, so no glue of any kind was needed.
Once you have your target, you need some bolas to toss it. Now, obviously from the name “ladder golf”, golf balls are the standard. However, this is not an option for the little guys around. Golf balls are very hard, and the potential for injury to someone (or something) is high. So, we used tennis balls instead! It worked great! To make tennis ball bolas (you’ll need at least 6 bolas), you’ll need about 15 feet of nylon rope/cord, 12 tennis balls, and a drill (using a 5/16″ bit) or box cutter/knife. Paper clip and a lighter. We started by drilling holes in tennis balls. The drill bit didn’t go through easily unless it was already started. So, it’s best to indent/puncture the ball first (even a small/sharp drill bit will work). Once you’ve drilled the holes, you’ll need to lace the nylon cord. To do this, we cut six 25″ pieces of cord and then used a lighter to close each end of the cord. Then, we made a kind of big needle out of a paper clip, tied it through the string, and pulled the string through the tennis ball. Then, you will tie knots on each side of each tennis ball. You can get tennis ball bolas with about 12 inches of cord between each ball.
You can coordinate the tennis balls by painting them or decorating them in some way to make the team balls different and easier to identify. But we haven’t done that yet because the boys are so excited to go play! 🙂
They had so much fun playing! Now, we got to try it out with the adults and play “for real”! 🙂 So, if you’re looking for an easy and inexpensive project that’s sure to provide lots of outdoor fun, make your own ladder golf set!
