The weather forecast calls for clear skies and a cool chill over the next week plus no schools on Monday, January 30 in the Vancouver school district. Here are some activities for playing outside on a sunny, snowy, and rainy day:
Outdoor Games In Winter

Fun Winter Activities For Teens
Freeze ice cubes and build little igloos – freeze ice in loaf tins, ice cube trays, etc., (NC State, 2014).
Goals can be as simple as making a circle in the snow where kids can aim their snowballs. A hula hoop, or a large container such as a laundry basket, can be used as targets. Alternatively, small plastic containers can be placed at different distances from the throw line, pushed into the snow, or set at an angle in a snowdrift for children to target (PennState Extension, 2017).
The gondola still had a lot of snow at our peak. Enter and rent a tube for our tube park for only $5. Minimum height restriction is 42 inches. We’ve built a natural tube park, which means there’s a short walk after you get on the tube to the bottom. After the kids are tired, head to Bodhi square for a light meal in front of the fireplace before the kids head out to play in the Plaza’s playground or the new snow castle.
Create a snow trail pattern for the kids to follow. The maze may be simple with straight lines, or it may have many twists and turns. Kids can walk or run through the maze to see if they can find the fastest way from start to finish. They can pretend to be cars driving down the street, or play a game of stop and start at an intersection (PennState Extension, 2017).
Winter Activities For Toddlers & Preschoolers
Capture snowflakes on black construction paper and use a magnifying glass to see them clearly. Are they all exactly the same? How are they different?
With all the leaves off the trees, the nests are easier for children to see. Search high and low for bird and squirrel nests. Keep counting. How many can you find in your neighborhood, local park, or in your garden center? Encourage children to flap their arms like birds or run like squirrels whenever they find a nest (NC State, 2014).
Find and collect winter colors. Although more challenging than other seasons, there are still lots of colors in winter. For an added challenge, find the box of crayons that best matches the colors found outdoors (NC State, 2014).
With the children’s help, make a list of five things to look for on a walk. The list could be red doors, mailboxes, doghouses, etc. or you could base your list on a theme, such as a winter sign. Look for things on your list when you take the kids for a walk. The first person to find those five items can create a new list of the five items that must be found (PennState Extension, 2017)

You may need to find a less-visited area for this: look for animal tracks in the snow. Or, try identifying a “kids track” (stand in line and have everyone take a few steps) (NC State, 2014).
