Outdoor Family Portraits – Hi friends! Welcome to my blog! I’m glad you’re here to read about one of the most recent outdoor family shoots I’ve had in beautiful Houston Texas! If this is your first time here, welcome! While I specialize in posed newborn photography, I do a handful of family or maternity portrait sessions per month and enjoy working outside in nature. It’s fun to get out of my studio once in a while, ha!
However, most of my family clients have small children since many of the clients did maternity and newborn photos with me. This means their kids are probably 5 or younger since that’s how long I’ve been in business. Family photography is a lot of fun, but that doesn’t mean all sessions have the same dynamic. For example, the way you pose a family with teenagers is much different than the way you pose a family with toddlers. This session was really fun for me because it’s a bit outside the box, in terms of my own portrait work, and really got me thinking about context and posing.
Outdoor Family Portraits
To elaborate, when working with younger children, the session is often about parents holding the little ones, kissing them, throwing them up in the air and really embracing the child’s spirit. These are my “go to” poses, lots of play and cuddles, because when the kids are toddlers, this is what you want to remember: their innocence, laughter, the way their faces fill with absolute joy when daddy holds them on their shoulders, things like that. As a mom to three little girls, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the photos of my kids being young and carefree. There will come a time when they are more aware of the camera and get older; I will miss this! Working with teenagers can be a challenge because sometimes they can feel awkward in front of the camera.
Tips For Creating Great Family Portraits
These kids were amazing though! I enjoyed having them in front of my camera. They were super relaxed, respectful and overall an absolute delight. 🙂
When hiring your family photographer, it’s important to choose someone who reflects the type of photos you’re looking for. Because of this I like to show full galleries and like to blog my sessions because it’s nice to share what I’ve photographed.
This beautiful family contacted me about 10 weeks in advance to secure an appointment in my calendar. When their contract expired, I saw the ages of their children and thought, “Okay, this will be new to me!” We had a great time, but I’m very happy with the final gallery. We used a lovely location in Northwest Houston that has wonderful fir trees and an open field. This is a good choice for sunset photography as the sun sets in the west. That way, your background gets the sun to filter through the trees, which really adds a lovely element to your photos.
Also, their outfits look great! If you are currently unsure of how to style your own family, take this family as inspiration. They did an excellent job of coordinating without looking too similar. In addition, the photos can be hung all year round without looking like they were taken during the holiday months. After all, the goal of your pictures is to hang them on the wall and act as a lovely time capsule in your home. I sell digital files in all my collections, but ultimately we want you to print and frame them. 🙂

The first thing you need to do to ensure you get amazing family photos is to choose a photographer who is used to working with children and families. Trust us, this will make a HUGE difference in making the experience less stressful with better results. Not all photographers are created equal and you want someone who is fun, charming and can bring out your child’s natural smile. Family photography is a specialty and a good family photographer will be patient, understanding and (hopefully) prompt.
Your children will be much more comfortable and relaxed with someone who knows how to talk to children, how to make them laugh and is willing to interact with them. Ask for referrals from friends who have kids (word of mouth is the best way to find a family-friendly photographer) and make sure their portfolio shows lots of kids in their photos.

“(1) Choosing a photographer for your family is about more than price and portfolio. When children are involved, the personality of your photographer is important. Make sure you hire someone who is an expert in working with children. (2) Never let little ones sleep during the car ride to your session. They will be groggy and cranky from being woken up and it’s hard to recover from. (3) Don’t put yourself above bribes (because they work is a great way to get the kids to cooperate) – and let your photographer in on the treats offered for good behavior. (4) Dress your children for the weather; cold children are not happy children! (5) Work with your photographer to draw out genuine emotion from your children. Instead of “Come on!
