Outdoor Family Photos

Outdoor Family Photos – You’ve booked your outdoor family photo shoot, and can’t wait to finally get some photographs together that you’ll be proud to display at home.

Choosing what to wear is a decision that all of my clients want to discuss with me, and I fully understand how significant it can feel. You’re investing in professional photographs and want to make sure everyone looks their best.

You may be wondering how formal you should be, what color dress you should wear, and whether your kids will agree to wear the dress you choose!

Best Colours To Wear For Family Portraits

In this article I’ll explain how to create a timeless, cohesive look when choosing clothing for your outdoor family photographs.

When you’re selecting clothing for your outdoor family photographs I recommend considering how your clothing complements the natural environment around you and how the entire family’s clothing complements each other.

The best place to start when you’re choosing clothing for your family is the setting in which you’ll be doing the photo shoot. What kind of clothes do you usually wear there?

For example, if you’re doing an autumn photo shoot in the park, it will look a lot more natural if you wear a smart/casual dress and wellies than your Sunday best.

Likewise, as you put together your family’s wardrobe, make sure everyone in your family is dressed for the same weather and occasion.

For example, if everyone is wearing short-sleeved tops with shorts or skirts, but one person is wearing a thick cardigan or coat, the person in the cardigan or coat will look out of place.

Similarly if one person wears shorts and a t-shirt and everyone else has formal wear and trousers, the person wearing shorts will look out of place. Making sure you dress for the same weather and occasion will ensure you look cohesive as a team.

Color coordination may sound a bit OTT but choosing complementary colors can really bring photographs together, and importantly ensure we see the people first and their clothes second.

This doesn’t mean that everyone has to wear the same thing, or that everyone has to wear every color in your color scheme. The goal is to coordinate, not match.

When putting together your family’s color scheme, choose a maximum of three or four colors that run through it.

If you’re not sure where to start it can help to think of an outfit that you absolutely want to include and build your color scheme with three or four colors and tones that compliment it. Or choose a patterned item — like a little girl’s skirt or mom’s favorite scarf — and use the colors as the basis for your scheme.

As you choose your color scheme, take some time to consider the colors that surround you in your chosen location, as this will influence the colors that will work best for your shoot.

For example, nature provides a soft color palette during spring and summer – think beautiful spring flowers, or long grass in summer. Autumn and winter can be much more brown, gold and orange.

With this in mind, soft neutral colors work best in spring and summer, while deep, dark colors can work well in fall and winter.

Another thing to consider is that there are some things that don’t work well in outdoor family photos at any time of year.

Blacks, neons and very bright colors generally don’t work well in outdoor photos and can look quite unbalanced as they contrast with the soft color palette that Mother Nature provides. I recommend avoiding them entirely.

Layering and using different textures can add a lot of dimension and interest to your photos. Think gilets, cardigans and jackets.

This can be especially effective in early spring or fall, when the weather is cooler. If you don’t want everyone wearing their coats, layers can keep you warm.

Accessories can also work well, if they’re something you’d normally wear in that location – hats, scarves, jewelery and hair bands for example can add depth and texture to your photographs.

It might not be popular with your superhero-crazy kids, but costumes with pictures and slogans will date your photos faster. It is generally best to avoid them altogether.

This is especially important for children, as they grow very quickly. It is often inevitable that sometimes their clothes are a little too small, or a little too big.

However, for your photo shoot I recommend choosing clothes that fit well now without room to grow. Clothes that are too big can sometimes make babies appear drowned in photographs. Well-fitting clothes will give a very sharp image.

I hope you found this article useful as you plan outfits for your family to wear to your outdoor photo shoot.

Keeping in mind the overall goal of complimenting your environment and each other should help you achieve that cohesive look.

“Time flies so fast – we blink and our children grow up. Don’t let these sweet memories go without documentation. At this time when our children are small, and we can tickle them, throw them over their heads for a laugh, Give them butterfly kisses or pull them close. These moments are fleeting, and our memories won’t hold every little detail. That’s the effect of photography and what an image really is in it. You can look at a picture and remember it for the rest of your life. You can. That’s the power of a photograph…it can transport you to another time and hold fond memories for life.” @christiallencurtis

The first thing you need to do to ensure you get amazing family photos is to choose a photographer who is used to working with children and families. Trust us, it will make a huge difference in making the experience less stressful with better results. Not all photographers are created equal and you want someone who is fun, charming and can bring out your child’s natural smile. Family photography is a specialty, and a good family photographer will be patient, understanding, and (hopefully) quick.
