Do not believe when they tell you that there is nothing to do in Surabaya. There are at least four, yes FOUR things to do in Surabaya with the kids besides shopping malls. I know, it doesn’t sound like much, but at least despite our 2 week trip, we managed to entertain the kids and I didn’t die trying to come up with a new version of the little twinkling star. The rap version was pretty hard.

This is an underwater museum similar to the ones you would find in most US ports. Indonesia bought the original Russian submarine in 1962 and it was used during the campaign to drive the Dutch out of the Irian Jaya. The sub is kept in surprisingly good shape and even has working air conditioning. For 5000 rupees per adult you get access to the submarine itself, a small museum and a short film about the history of the submarine. The sub is quite large compared to others we have been in and Evan loved looking out the hatches and lying on the beds. The place was empty when we arrived, so we were able to stay in each of the sub areas for as long as we wanted. We didn’t actually go inside the museum or see the movie, but I think Evan was really impressed by the size of the sub and kept yelling “big boat” as he pointed it out. The tour took about a half hour tops as we were looking at every switch and room, but you could probably check it out in less than 10 minutes. Anyway, I think it’s worth a visit and for less than 1 USD, why not?

This old Dutch building used to house an orphanage in the early 1860s. After it was bought in the 1930s by the founder of the Sampoerna cigarette company, it became the largest cigarette factory in Surabaya. One of the biggest draws is watching a thousand ladies roll cigarettes by hand at astonishing speeds. You will also find a small museum and a very good coffee shop and art gallery. Evan was especially annoyed by the old bikes, motorcycles and cars and we all enjoyed a very good and reasonably priced lunch in his cafeteria.

Sampoerna House is the headquarters of the Surabaya Heritage Track. This is a free sightseeing tour of Old Surabaya in a very nice tram. A tour guide points out and describes the most important historical buildings in the city in very decent English and we get to enjoy a nice walk around the city for free! It makes two stops: one at the Surabaya Tourist Information Office and the second at the Cultural Center where you can occasionally catch music and dance performances. Both Evan and Josh loved riding the trolley and would gaze intently out the window. They both became very good friends on the tram and it seemed like everyone wanted to hug them and take pictures. Although the tour is free, it is necessary to make a reservation in advance for any of the three departure times 9:00 AM, 1:00 PM or 3:00 PM.

This is a very lively street full of food stalls and bazaars. Although this is not an attraction itself, it is a very nice place to visit and walk around. You can find decent food and overall a very nice atmosphere. We went there early in the evening so it wouldn’t be too crowded. We hear that this is a very popular place late at night and that its bars and restaurants are always full. We found a small cafe where we had dinner and really enjoyed sitting and watching the people passing by on the street. It was nice to finally find a place where you can actually walk in the fresh air. G-Walk is located between Pakuwon Super Mall and Ciputra Golf.

You’ve probably read about the giraffe that died in an Indonesian zoo because it ate a plastic bag, well this is the zoo where it happened. Granted, this isn’t the best zoo and it’s definitely not kept in the best condition, but it was still a nice thing to do and a nice break from hotel life. The entrance fee is only Rs 5,000 per person. I really wish they would charge more so the animals could be kept in more decent conditions.

Evan particularly enjoyed feeding the birds peanuts we bought at the zoo entrance for 10,000 rupees and loved riding in a camel-drawn carriage (5,000 per person). Later, he rode a horse with a very nice zookeeper who wouldn’t charge him for the ride, but was happy to accept a Rs 10,000 tip for giving Evan a little tour of the food court area.

We saw an animal show where a bear was riding a bike and pelicans were dancing. Both Evan and Joshua were scared to see the animals so close to them, so we left shortly after the show started. Again, the main attraction was my children. Everyone wanted to touch them and take pictures of them. A pregnant woman began touching Joshua’s plump cheeks and then rubbing her belly, to convey her plumpness and “health” the baby in her womb. Once the animal show was over, a group of about 40 kids from the school crowded around Evan and Josh and started looking at them and trying to play with them. I thought it was fun but the guys got a bit overwhelmed so we left the zoo without finishing the tour of the whole place. I don’t think we missed much, but it was still interesting to see so many animals and see the children react to them.

Of course, being in Indonesia, we ended up going to the mall about half the time, but luckily I was able to find two nice indoor play areas for Evan to run around in and me to sit and force encourage Josh some tummy time.

The mall we visited the most was Tunjungan Plaza as the hotel had a shuttle that took us there. It is very close to the Marriot and we walked there a couple of times. We spent most of our time at Stingers, a playground with an indoor playground on the 5th floor and a basement playground in the mall.

Surabaya was a nice and quiet city to visit and I wouldn’t hesitate to visit again as I know we miss seeing various museums and visiting the great water park in western Surabaya. Although it is not the most dynamic city, it is a good place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of Big Durian.
