The average climbing experience will be around two and a half hours. * I was a guest of Edmonton Tourism as part of an organized media tour But as always, the adventures, stories and information provided are truly and spontaneously my own.

Edmonton takes its winters seriously But in the summer, it lights up with festivals, events, river valley activities and patios for eating, drinking and eating ice cream.

Despite being 5 hours away in Saskatoon, I have only visited briefly It’s an escape in the winter to shop at the West Edmonton Mall and check out the water park and Galaxyland. I didn’t really take the time to be a tourist in the city

Which is why I was so excited to visit this summer as part of an active and fitness-focused media tour with Edmonton Tourism.

River Valley Adventure Co.

Myself and three other women from Canada and the United States hit the city for four days, hosted by our wonderful local guides Ula and Meredith of Edmonton Tourism.

It felt like more than just girls as we quickly became friends Over the weekend, we managed to bike, run and hike through some great neighborhoods.

Here are five of the best activities to enjoy if you’re planning to visit Edmonton this summer:

An active way to see more of Edmonton (and my favorite way to site-see and get the lay of the land when traveling to a new city) is to drive the Edmonton River Valley.

Best Things To Do In Edmonton (alberta, Canada)

Canada’s largest urban park has 20 parks and 160 kilometers of trails Running apps like Strava can motivate you with segment features that track results against others running the same route. But the most effective incentive is to join a group and go

Running Room’s flagship store started 35 years ago in the living room of an old house in Edmonton. Today it is one of Canada’s go-to stores for all running information, education and gear (They have 100 stores in North America and have trained over 800,000 runners!)

Every week they offer a free run club on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings But if you prefer a little more hands-on training, consider one of over a dozen training programs.

If you want to challenge yourself and work towards a goal, register for one of the city’s many races Try the Lululemon Edmonton 10km, the Edmonton Ice Cream Run (you get two scoops of ice cream after your run – for real!), the Mega Bounce Run (sign up for a run that includes ten inflatables along the 5km route). Christmas In Edmonton: 30+ Festive Things To Do This Season

One of the highlights of my visit to Edmonton was an e-bike to explore the river valley (the river is 22 times bigger than Central Park FYI).

An e-bike combines electric power with a standard bicycle to facilitate pedaling. The small motor on the bike makes it a little more engaging to cruise through city hills or wind (so you have more time to enjoy the scenery).

We opted for a 2-hour guided e-bike ride with Revolution Cycles which covered 25 kms strenuously. We cruised along the river, stopped to take photos on several bridges, and wandered through some of Edmonton’s iconic neighborhoods.

My favorite stop was at the Talus Dome art gallery to snap some Instagram-worthy photos in front of the pyramid of silver balls.

Revolution Cycle offers e-bike rentals if you want to explore on your own Rental from 10am to 4pm costs $85.00 Guided tours start at $80 and go up to $160 depending on whether the tour is 2 or 5 hours.

With nearly 60 festivals throughout the year, Edmonton is known as “Canada’s Festival City” for a reason. Even -40 Celsius temperatures in winter don’t stop Edmontonians from getting out and about for the Deep Freeze, Snow in White and Silver Skates festival.

In the summer months, the city hosts folk music festivals and symphonies in the sky, along with the continent’s first, largest and wildest Fringe Theater Festival.

If farmers markets are your thing, the Old Strathcona Farmers Market operates on Saturdays year-round. Although it’s indoors, it spills out into the streets in the summer and mixes with other festivals like the White on the Boardwalk sand and the International Street Performer Festival.

Other great markets in the city to check out are 124 Grand Market and the Downtown Farmers Market

It’s not an hour outside the city, but it feels like miles away Elk Island National Park was established to protect the nation’s last remaining herds of wild bison

Today, they have a successful reintroduction and conservation program and their bison can be found all over the world – both at home in Grassland National Park West Block and Prince Albert National Park West Block in Saskatchewan.

We spent an afternoon at the park and joined the Bison backstage tour to learn a little more about the working handling facility. Not only did I get to hold a real bison skull but I got to climb a bison controlled hike every couple of years.

Free Things To Do In Winter

The park is also a designated dark sky preserve if you want to stargaze, see the milky way or try your luck with the northern lights.

Always free, always fun The November Project is a grassroots fitness movement (and book) that is taking over the world.

What started as a dare between two former collegiate rowers in a Boston bar has turned into YEG. Originally started in the city by Edmonton Oiler Andrew Ference in 2013, 6AM Workout is now run by a variety of people. Training is done three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday

As the locations vary (but Commonwealth Stadium and Walterdale Park are two regulars) so do the exercises. For 30 minutes, the community gathers and performs activities such as pushups, lunges, squats and running hills, trails or stairs.

The best part is that everyone is welcome regardless of your fitness level or expertise Just show up! Although it seems like summer was just a few weeks ago, it’s time to face the harsh reality that the winter season of the year is upon us Canada is notorious for its arctic-esque winters, and we Albertans know that better than most, especially here in the capital of northern Alberta.

Winter isn’t all bad though No matter how cold winds and endless piles of snow may bug you, give the next few months the benefit of the doubt and see how much you can enjoy yourself. It’s the best time of the year for festive activities, exploring the outdoors (bundling of course) and spending quality time with your loved ones. You’re not a bear, you don’t need to go into hibernation as soon as it snows

Even if you don’t want to venture into the great outdoors this winter, there are still plenty of things you can do around the beautiful city of Edmonton. Relax on a romantic date with your boo, discover a new favorite artist at one of the many amazing concerts coming to YEG, or if you’re balling on a budget, check something out.
