Outdoor Activity Early Years – The following are some of my favorite maths ideas and activities for the EYFS (Early Years – Children aged 2-5). For ideas for outdoor maths activities for older children, you can check out my post, Outdoor Maths Activities KS1.
Young children need to be able to manipulate and use hand tools to explore mathematical thinking. Using manipulatives and expressing math concepts in a variety of ways allows children to have a deeper understanding and connect different areas of math. Children need to be able to use objects to help them count and represent numbers. This will help them begin to solve simple math problems so they can develop strong math skills (Anghileri, 2006).

Children will gain a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and how different domains are connected if they are given opportunities to explore (Carruthers & Worthington, 2004). In the long run, this will help them increase their confidence in mathematics, and allow them to apply their learning to problem solving. I love having a list of simple outdoor activities that I can quickly put together on a nice day. All of these outdoor activities are easy to set up and use tools you probably already have around your house (or can easily make).

The Age of Toys is a simple ebook full of hands-on learning activities. It is designed for children ages 2-6 and includes 12 monthly calendars and 48 weekly activity plans! Can you see the sun? Me too. Sometime between the first day of spring and the last day of school, my heart longs for an outdoor activity for the kids. I am definitely a child of the 80’s. It is essential to open the garage door and ask the children to return at sunset.
But the reality is that days with small children and toddlers are not so simple. I remember having small children and wondering how we were going to get to bed time.

Let’s Take A Story Outside By Ruth Ludlow
Is your child learning to ride a balance bike or pedal bike? Here are the best bikes for kids.
It’s so hard to pick a favorite! But I have two options that always appeal to kids.
Splash the Alphabet is a favorite and is so much fun! Add a drop of food coloring to a bottle of water.
Choose a letter and throw it away! We have such fond memories of playing Chalk Outdoor games. It’s like a board game that you can walk around. Whoa. Busy, isn’t it?
Getting Winter Ready
Another easy-peasy and breezy outdoor activity (I can’t help myself) is Paint the Rocks. One day we need to go rock hunting. The next step, paint them. Or, if you want a sensory game, try Bear Soup Sensory Play. How can I repay these bears for the joy they brought my children?! I really like them – and I still catch my eight year old playing with them. Take the bear outside for an outdoor water tank. bear soup? It’s okay if I do!
You know what else I tried? Taking indoor toys to the outdoors was a real hit. I made it for Outdoor Tracks Water Play. The boys tested the racing cars and tried to put them in a bucket full of water. (Always watch small children around the water).
Of course, I can’t say the Scavenger Hunt music. Music hunting is a great way to get out and about. Play a favorite song. When it stops – run and pick up something in the color that stops. It’s great fun for all ages.
If you want to add some outdoor math, give Shapes and Shaving Cream a try. We released the 3D model and created a new sculpture. This is a great late morning activity outside before the sun comes up. When it’s hot, bring everyone (and everything) down.
Reception Outdoor Activities
If shaving cream is your jam, try Shaving Cream Pups. This bucket is a blast when the kids dig up the calves and throw them clean out of the water bottle.
If your child has run out of shaving cream (who does?!) and wants some extra fun, give Nature Murals a try. It is a two-step outdoor event. First, collect things outside. Next, attach them to a large piece of wood or cardboard. A fun way to strengthen little hands, practice gluing, and introduce creativity.
One of my fall favorites is Pumpkin Balance. Can you balance a small pumpkin on your head? It’s harder than it looks – but it gave us all a good laugh out there when we needed time before cooking dinner.
I also can’t talk about pumpkins without Leaf Coloring. I use butcher paper from a home improvement store for exterior painting. Draw what your child likes, and the rest is up to them. Let your toddlers and preschoolers mix colors while coloring.
