It’s kind of a tradition in scouting to collect patches. Scouts get patches for all sorts of things. Visit a historical place, get a patch. Sell some popcorn, get a patch to help raise funds. Complete one of Cub Scouting’s many achievements, earn a patch. Visit scouts from another district, get a patch. After you’ve been in Scouts for a while, you’ve got a bunch of them. They come in three groups.
Awards. There are some patches given to Cub Scouts that have their own place on the uniform. The most common of these are rank awards. When your Scout completes his Bobcat, Tiger, Wolf, Bear or Webelos requirements, he will be awarded a patch. These patches are permanently attached to the left pocket of the uniform shirt. You can see the arrangement in the picture on the left. Another award is the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award. It is worn as a permanent patch on the right shirt pocket flap (note that it is the same as the pocket flap). Another permanent award is the religious knot. Remember, only one temporary patch should be displayed at any time.

Other patches. There are also many other patches that your Scout can be given or collect. He can get one when he visits a historical place. He might get one for participating in a pack event like a pinewood derby or scouting for food. These are not worn on uniform. The previously mentioned Rocket Launch patch is one of these. There are several options for displaying these patches. If your Scout wants to show them off, consider putting them on a patched shirt. These red vests are sold in the Scout Store and you can put any patch you like on them, even if you don’t receive them at an official Scout event. The vest is not considered part of the uniform but may be worn over it at den and pack events. You can also consider placing them on a patch blanket. The Scout Store sells one, although it’s in Boy Scout colors. Or you can put your patches on your favorite blanket at home. Your scout can hang it in his room and add to it as he collects more patches. Another option is to organize them in a binder. The Scout Store sells clear plastic binder sheets with pockets for all your patches. You can put them away for later. When our Scouts earn their Arrow of Light at the end of their Cub Scout adventure, they often keep their favorite patches in a display case.
