I’ve shared quite a few winter projects and activities over the years, but while going through my posts last week I noticed a gaping hole in my collection – where were the winter outdoor game ideas?! I grew up in Ohio where the winters can be quite snowy and cold, and most of our free time was spent playing outside – regardless of the temperature. When winter hit, my sister and I would jump at the chance to get together for just about any outdoor fun, whether it was shoveling the driveway with Dad or trudging up the sledding hill at the end of the block.

From fresh air and vitamin D to assessing risk-taking and better sleep, the benefits of outdoor play are undeniable. I can confirm from my own life experience that the physical challenges of moving through the snow are a unique set of muscles and a new awareness of balance. And when I think back, some of my best memories of winter games involve activities that also helped develop my social skills, creativity, empathy and confidence.

Make a list of colors and try to find each one in nature outside. This is a great way to help your toddler learn color names and is also a fun outdoor activity.
Spend some time outside collecting leaves, twigs and pine cones and create a collage artwork using glue and crayons. For more advanced children, you can ask them to draw their own interpretation of your found objects next to the real ones.
The sooner you get your kids building things with their hands, the better. Let their imaginations run wild as you use snow as your medium to build traditional holiday characters like Frosty. Who says castles have to be made of sand? Get extra creative and build snow castles with your child, complete with a drawbridge made of twigs and other decorations.
