I have a list of toys that we can start at any age or stage. For outdoor activity purposes – these are the best outdoor toys for kids that we have used for years. Some of my favorites are:

Fun & Simple Outdoor Activities For Kids
Splash the Alphabet is cute and so much fun! Add a drop of food coloring to the water bottles.
Choose a letter and spin it! We also have great memories from playing the Outdoor Chalk Game. It’s like a board game that you can walk on. wow I’m blown away, aren’t I?
Another easy and breezy (I couldn’t help myself) outdoor activity is Paint the Rocks. Some days we have to go rock hunting. Next step, color them. Or if you’re looking for a bit of sensory play, try Bear Soup Sensory Play. How will I repay the joy these bears brought to my children?! They are adorable so far and I still catch my eight year old playing with them. Bring the bears outside for an outdoor water bowl. Bear soup? I don’t mind if I do!
You know what else I tried? Taking indoor toys outside was a HUGE hit. I did this for Outdoor Tracks Water Play. The boys tested their racing cars and tried to lower them in buckets of water. (Always watch young children around water).
Free Outdoor Activities For Kids To Do
Of course, I couldn’t mention the Musical Scavenger Hunt. A musical scavenger hunt is a great way to get outside and get moving. Play your favorite song. When you stop – run and take something of the color you stopped. Great fun for all ages.
If you want to add outdoor math, use Shapes and Shaving Cream. We took out our 3D shapes and made new sculptures. This is a great morning activity outside before the sun gets too hot. When it warms up, turn everyone (and everything) down.
If shaving cream is your jam, then try Shaving Cream Pups. This sensory box is a blast as kids bury the puppies and clean them with a water bottle.
If your child is out of shaving cream (though who is?!) and wants some extra sensory fun, check out Nature Murals. This is a two-step outdoor activity. First, collect the items outside. Then glue them to a giant piece of wood or cardboard. A fun way to strengthen little hands, practice gluing and combine creativity.

One of my favorite products for fall is the Pumpkin Balance. Can you balance a mini pumpkin on your head? It’s more complicated than it sounds – but it gave us all a good laugh outside when we needed time until dinner was ready.
I can’t mention pumpkins without including Leaf Painting. I use butcher paper from home improvement stores to paint outside. Draw something your child likes, and the rest is up to you. Let your toddler and preschooler mix colors while coloring.
