The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department wasn’t suspicious when the iconic sandstone formation known as “The Duck” collapsed.
Erosion occurs. Stones fall. The cliff on which the shape rests, in the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area, was so unstable that it was fenced off to keep visitors away. There was no mystery: The 7- to 10-foot pedestal on the beach had apparently collapsed on its own.
Then a man named David Kalas said that there was no time and no weather that brought the rock down. It was vandals.

Campfires Temporarily Banned At Oregon State Parks

Kalas told The Oregonian that he laughed instead of panicking when he saw a group of strangers messing around with the joint.

Kalas told KATU News that he spoke with the people he said dropped the rock in the fenced-off section of Cape Kiwanda.
Anger Boils At Crowded Oregon Campsites
“I asked them why they knocked over the rock and the answer I got was this: their friend broke his leg because of this rock before,” Kalas told KATU. “They basically told me it was a security threat and they were doing the world or Oregon a favor.”
The Tillamook County Pioneer news site published a statement from the Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation, saying the department and state police are reviewing the video and determining how to respond.
The “Statesman Journal” newspaper reports that anyone who helps blow up the rock faces a fine of up to $435.
Instagram users mourn the loss of the often-photographed rock, sharing images of its former glory with the hashtag #ripthatPNWrock. (The rock was variously known as “duckhead,” “Pedestal Rock,” or “that Pacific Northwest rock.”)

The photo atop the now-collapsed plinth was “one of the most sought-after images” of the Oregon coast, the newspaper reported in July — but the shot required climbing a fence and crossing a treacherous culvert.
“Since 2009, seven people have died in the area. There have been six fatal falls in the past two years. Rescue efforts by the local fire district and the US Coast Guard cost $21,000 an hour, often reaching $106,000,” the newspaper wrote.

A park ranger was assigned to patrol the fence, but “it will be no easy task to combat the allure of this perfect landscape perched on a natural pedestal above the ocean.”

Alcoholic beverages may be served at the Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center, River House, Hillsboro Community Senior Center, Civic Center Complex, Hidden Creek Community Center, Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve, and Gordon Faber Recreation Complex only with proper inspection and approval. The following conditions apply:
All events where alcohol is present require an OLCC Special Events License and you either require payment or purchase or accept monetary donations (including a care box).
Please call the OLCC at 503-872-5198 to determine and/or confirm whether you need an OLCC license. OLCC may take 10-30 days to process the license. The OLCC license must be displayed in the area where alcoholic beverages are served.
Generally, an OLCC Special Events License is not required when alcohol is present, but no payment or purchase is required, and monetary donations for alcohol, admission/admission or any other product or service are not accepted.
