Ice Activities For Early Years
We use milk cartons, plastic food containers, disposable gloves, balloons, and ice-cube molds to create unique ideas. The most helpful tip to remember is to freeze in layers if you want to spread all your trinkets and items evenly. However, this is not possible with gloves. Blow up the balloons first to stretch them before adding items!
Fine Motor Skills Activities
Some of the things you can include in your ice play are plastic animals, cars, glass gems, glitter, sequins, magnets, superheroes, plastic coins, jewels and stars. We’ve used feathers, real items from the beach, and even pieces from our Christmas tree! The possibilities are endless. Our ice science activities make great early learning activities for all kinds of themes and seasons!
Ice activities are great for learning about reversible changes, temperature, and properties of water. Ice melt science is also great for practicing fine motor skills with spray bottles, squirt bottles, and eye droppers or basters!

How To Create Simple Play Tray Activities For Toddler & Preschool Children
I used different sized containers and colored the water yellow and green. I added lemon and lime juice for an aromatic sensory play. He had fun using his water gun outside to melt the ice!

Older kids will still have a lot of fun and benefit from playing with this sensory ice tub. The wonderful thing about sensory play is that it opens the door to so many wonderful learning opportunities such as imaginative play, language exploration, fine motor development for pre-writing skills, coordination, social interaction and much more.

Over the course of a few weeks I recycled several empty containers, filled them with water and put them in the freezer. We tried to use containers with different shapes, patterns and sizes to help make the ice world more interesting. We used yogurt containers, empty biscuit trays that made great patterned ice shapes, large and small bowls, tall and short containers and ice cube trays.
Water Cycle Kids Activities
When we were ready to use the frozen ice, I put them on the bench for 5-10 minutes to let the ice melt a bit which made it much easier to remove.
We put a few drops of blue food coloring in a small jug of water and poured it over the ice to create the blue ice effect you see in Antarctica and the Arctic.
Sensory play opens up opportunities to talk about and use words to describe what is being experienced. How the snow felt in our hands, cold, cold cold, if we hold it in our hands for a long time it hurts because it is so cold. The ice also looked smooth, smooth and clear and visible. We joked about how it felt to bathe in it.
The wonderful thing about open-ended play opportunities is that they can grow and take a whole new direction. Our ice world had yet to melt overnight and the sprinklers filled the tub even more. So as the next day warmed up it became a whole other play opportunity where Miss 4 enjoyed sitting in the tub and scooping all the sea creatures out of the tub with a cup.

Arctic Summer Sea Ice Could Be Gone By As Early As 2035
Okay, I think I’m here to admit that this is the easiest, least-prep art activity ever! Squeeze a little ready mix or powder paint in a range of bright colors into the holes of a large muffin tin, top with water and mix well until the colors are combined and bright. Try using a toothpick to mix so you don’t stain your hands.
Then pop the tray into the freezer immediately before the paint and water separate and leave until solidified.
When they are ready to use, pop them out on a sensory table or some large sheets of paper on the floor and try making signs with them!
Babies have to work fast before they start melting, but the colors actually blend well once the melting process starts! It is very pleasant for a hot day 🙂
Learning Activities For 18 24 Month Olds. Toddler Activities.
In many ways it’s more about the sensory experience of handling the icy paint blocks than the art produced, although the colors created some beautiful effects too! Once dry they make amazing abstract art works that can be collaged or used to make more art.
With our frozen ice blocks as sensory play, they enjoyed trying to break the ice while using it. Scoop it up with a spoon and smoosh it as it melts into the paper.
