Conclusion This paper explains that there are well-understood physical mechanisms by which changes in the amount of greenhouse gases cause climate change. He discusses the evidence that atmospheric concentrations of these gases have been increasing and are still increasing rapidly, that climate change is occurring, and that most recent changes are almost certainly due to emissions of greenhouse gases caused by human activities. Further climate change is inevitable; If greenhouse gas emissions continue unabated, future changes will far outweigh past ones. There are still a number of estimates of the magnitude and regional expression of future changes, but an increase in climate extremes that can adversely affect natural ecosystems and human activities and infrastructure is expected. Citizens and governments have several options (or a mix of options) to choose from in response to this information: they can change their patterns of energy production and use to limit emissions of greenhouse gases and thus the magnitude of climate change; they can wait for change and accept the resulting loss, harm and suffering; they can adapt as far as possible to actual and expected changes; or they can seek unproven “geoengineering” solutions to counteract some of the climate changes that might otherwise occur. Each of these options has risks, appeals and costs, and what is actually done may be a mix of these different options. Different nations and communities differ in their vulnerability and adaptability. There is an important debate to be had about choosing between these options, to decide what is best for each group or nation, and most importantly for the world population as a whole. The options need to be discussed at a global level, as in many cases the most vulnerable communities control few of the emissions, either in the past or in the future. Waste disposal is something that is not taken as seriously as it should be. I think we can all agree that throwing something in the trash is a lot easier than washing dishes. We don’t think about where the garbage ends up, whether it’s in a landfill or in the sea. We don’t think about how it can destroy sea life if it ends up in the ocean. Or if it ends up in a landfill or is incinerated, what dangerous chemicals are released into our environment.
Deforestation is another factor in climate change. According to National Geographic, if tropical deforestation were a country, it would rank third behind China and the United States in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. When trees are felled, carbon dioxide is released into the environment and their ability to absorb existing carbon dioxide ceases. Although wood is a renewable resource, forests’ ability to regrow may decrease due to deforestation and climate change, eventually leading to reduced biodiversity and thus increasing global warming. In terms of solutions, stopping the felling of trees is an obvious answer, but more practical would be employing proper forest management to ensure the environment is not destroyed. Local communities can join efforts to band together and start tree planting programs and forest management. It’s as simple as getting together a few days a year and planting trees to make the world greener.
