So, or before planning a session, quickly check this tool for sunrise, noon, and sunset positions and times.
This is really helpful because no two beaches are alike and the direction of light varies from one side of the world to the other. For example, in California the sun sets behind the beach, while on the East Coast the sun sets in the opposite direction.
Also, different beaches can face different directions, so it’s good to know where the sun will be during your session.
Tips: How To Take Great Beach Photos
The morning light on the beach is magical. It has a completely different color temperature than evening golden hour and can give a nice soft glow if your session is long enough.
The light gets a little bluer in the morning, and depending on the beach where your session takes place, the sun may be rising over the ocean or peeking through the trees. A beach on the east coast may allow you to catch the sunrise while taking photos.
Alternatively, on a California beach, you’ll catch the sun hitting the water from the ground. If your session is within a few hours of sunrise, this will give you a beautiful yellow-blue glow in the water.

Beach Family Lifestyle Photos
If the morning light casts unwanted shadows, use a simple reflector to shine the light onto your subject. This is especially beneficial if the sun rises behind the water at the beach.
Daylight is very harsh on the beach. So it’s good to have some additional lighting equipment to help with the shadows. You can use an external flash, pop flash or reflector.
Seeing shadows in front of your customers means the sun is behind them. This family is lit by an external camera, mounted on the camera (and shown in the foreground).
You can also go without an additional light source. If you choose this route, it’s a good idea to check your photos a bit so you can bring up the shadows in your editing software. Otherwise, you will end up with the heavens. Of course, it all depends on your photography style.
Tips For The Best Beach Photography
During the day, when the sun is at its peak, it can be a good time to take your clients under the shade of some trees or take some fun family photos. Have your clients walk, run, splash, build sandwiches, or just have some fun together.
The sun is at its highest at different times around the world, so check the ephemeris to know exactly when to expect sunset.
The sun will be at a slight angle as it passes the zenith and begins to set before sunset. It’s a sweet spot for daytime beach photography.
When the sun is at a slight angle, you can position your clients with the sun behind them to keep the light out of their eyes. So you’ll be in the sun, but your customers are better than direct sun; That way, you can avoid shadows, uneven lighting, and shake. The sand also acts as a natural reflector, reflecting light onto their faces.
What To Wear For Family Photos At The Beach
Afternoon light may be different in winter than in summer, but the sun will always be lower in the sky than at low noon. I recommend that your clients look away from the sun; so the sun begins to rise
Afternoon is a great time for beach portraits. Depending on the angle of the light, you can get some really interesting light, and as the sun goes down it will become even more golden.
If you move your subjects away from the sun, but you’re still getting harsh, bright light, you may want to consider using a reflector or some sort of fill flash to deal with those unwanted shadows.
The actual sunset lasts about 5-10 minutes. However, golden hour begins one hour before the sun sets below the horizon, meaning the light angle is very low and directional. While golden hour lighting is nice and warm, it makes it difficult to keep your customers in sync with the background.
How To Take Good Pictures Of Yourself
This can be especially difficult if the sun is setting over the water, as you will struggle to capture beautiful colors
So, bring a flash or an outside light source to illuminate your clients with the sunset in the background. You can also check your photos a bit and then raise the shadows without ruining the sunset.
To give your final images a different look, you can try silhouetteing your clients with sunset light:

Beach Photography Tips For Gorgeous Images
The blue hour is 20-30 minutes (sometimes less) after the sun has completely disappeared. The blue hour is a great time to take photos because the blue, orange, pink, and purple colors come out after sunset. The lighting is a bit dim, so you may need a tripod.
During the blue hour, you can give your clients a little extra light depending on where the sun is setting.
Stop by your customers and try slow shutter speed photos. Capturing motion in the water can produce beach portrait results.
Cloudy days are perfect for beach portraits. However, you may not get a particularly bright sunset (compared to a clear day).
Family Portraits On The Beach
The time of day doesn’t matter; It’s good to add variety to your beach portraits. Try some of these ideas:
If you wait for the sun to set a little, you can take some portraits near the trees that are not on the beach. It also adds variety to the final set of images.
