Well…I can see why people say it almost never leaves their camera. This is a really great, versatile lens. (PS. Interior photography tips are at the end :)).

– It is legal. You can immediately feel and see that this lens is the real deal, as it is heavier than the pack lenses and all around tangible. Of course, I’m only comparing it to the glasses and not to other glasses of its kind, but I think it’s definitely an upgrade.
– The zoom range is amazing. I got these three pieces for my Christmas tree from one place. I didn’t move at all.

I can take a full shot like this and then a detailed edit, the shoes she was proud of the wrong feet ;), immediately after just twisting my lens.
– It is affordable. If you’ve ever priced popular lenses, they’re a preeeeety penny. At around $400, the Tamron lens is still an investment but very affordable.
– Good print quality. You can’t really tell much when the photos are in digital format, but when you print your photos, you can see that the Tamron lens or any non-gear lens produces a little crisp and clean.
– The aperture size is very good. You can drop your f-stop number down to 3.5 which is great for indoor photography and portraits.

– This mirror is heavy. Some may or may not see it as a con, but I thought it was worth mentioning. I personally take it as a sign that it is a good tool, but you have to get used to the weight.
– The lens is the opposite of the glasses on my device. I’m sure this is something that usually varies from lens to lens, but there is a bit of a learning curve for myself in learning to zoom differently.

With winter almost upon us, I figured we should take more and more photos indoors. Even our family photos!

1. Use natural light as much as possible. I know this is not always convenient, but whenever you can, make sure to take pictures around bright windows. If the lighting is too harsh or coming directly onto your subject and creating dramatic scenes, try angling your blinds up so that the light bounces off the ceiling and fills the room with vibrant light. You can also try positioning your subject so that the light is coming from the side. Move your subject slightly away from the window so that no direct light hits them.
You may need to adjust your settings and make your ISO higher or your shutter speed slower, to compensate for the low amount of light.
Most of all, you want to avoid putting your back to the window. This causes the background to be overexposed and the subject to be overexposed. Unless of course this is what you are going for. You can expose the background, but not your subject’s silhouette, or overexpose the background and properly expose your subject to get a cool glow around your subject.
2. Avoid using flash. Unless you are familiar with using camera flash, I highly recommend avoiding it. It can create harsh shadows and all kinds of common photography problems like red eye, glare, etc.

When a photo is taken at night. Turn on as many lights as you can so there is plenty of ambient light. And if you can, don’t use AUTO. AUTO will always turn on the flashlight
Instead, crank your ISO all the way up (unless it’s incredibly bright) and dial your f-stop number as low as it will go. A quick aperture lesson: smaller f-stop number = wider aperture = more light allowed into the camera = more background blur.
Now, looking at your exposure meter, determine how fast you need your shutter speed to get a well-exposed photo (the small arrow should be at zero or the positive center). You may need to slow down a bit to get a proper exposure shot. Sometimes, I underexpose the shots (not too much!), knowing that I can improve the images later in editing. Or I change the lens to one with a wider range.
Think a manual is too much work? Most of the time, once you get your settings right they won’t change much until you move closer or further away from your light source.

Note: These are tips about not using the flash, but there are techniques you can use off-camera that I don’t feel ready to cover powerfully yet. 😉
If you don’t have photo editing software, then raising your ISO may not be a good idea, because high ISO creates grain. If you can only use free editing software, try not to let your ISO go above 800 and try your best to set your shutter speed as slow as you can manage. You may have more image blur, which is where the next step comes in handy…
4. Hold your breath! Unless you want to add a flash, then you should probably lower your shutter speed if you’re shooting indoors at night with only built-in lighting. When the speed drops to 1/200, your breathing can cause blur. If you hold your breath when you press down on the shutter button, it will help reduce camera shake. Of course, really, really still have it! 😉

5. Expect some detail. I always edit my pictures inside. I like to eliminate or minimize color casts, especially “warm” or yellow lamps that provide most or all of the ambient light. However, I don’t remove it altogether, because I still want it to have an internal light, but that’s a personal preference.
It’s helpful to use editing programs like Lightroom to tone down any grain as well. When shooting indoors, you should often increase or raise your ISO. As I mentioned earlier, higher ISO numbers mean more grain or blur in the images. This is easily remedied in Lightroom with the brightness slider. Other editing programs may allow you to “define” your images in a similar way. Your camera may also have a high ISO noise reduction feature. It drains the battery quickly, but I take about 60% of my photos indoors so I always have it on. It doesn’t reduce noise as much as post editing, but every little bit helps.
