The best professional headshot poses are those that feel natural to your subject. This allows clients to focus on having a natural look in their shots.
However, recent research has shown that body language can tell a lot about likeability and competence. So, you should think about how to pose for a professional photo, especially if you are taking a headshot with your body visible.
Not all poses will feel comfortable with your personality. So try a few different things and review the results between shots.
To start, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with using standard headshot poses for your headshot session. Keep your back straight, turn your chest 10 to 45 degrees away from the camera, and lean slightly toward the camera.

Similar to the over-the-shoulder pose, leaning sideways against a wall creates a candid tone for headshots. Make sure the walls are clear and bright when you do this pose. Dirty walls are a distraction.
Leaning towards the camera while seated can make you look relaxed during the session. This position is also suitable for clients who want to hide a double chin. (No judgment here!)
It’s hard to get just the right pose, but cross-candid poses can be wonderful assets for personal branding projects with consultants, entrepreneurs, and thinkers.
The term “cross-candid” means that the picture is candid (the subject is not looking into the lens) and the head is turned “sideways” to the camera. (If the client in the photo above is looking to the right of the camera, this photo is just “candid”.)

We always like to hear our clients’ preferences before or during a headshot session. However, even some seasoned pros may need a refresher course on great poses for non-models.
Here’s a great free tutorial from Jerry Ghionis below, along with tips on how to strike a woman’s pose.
“This video is about understanding poses for female subjects,” says Ghionis. “Not all subjects are experienced models, and very few photographers have ever modeled. So, who will take the pose. you!”

“How do you bring out the best in [female clients]?” Gionis asks. “Well, she is standing in front of you and waiting for her good opportunity, but you have to direct her. You have to bring out the best in her.”
“We want to reveal the form. In my opinion, it is the curves that define the female form. So we want to derive that curve. First of all, I don’t want my subject to be standing with flat feet. Whether you’re filming someone, a 12-year-old girl, or a female CEO of a company. A woman or girl standing with flat feet is very static. At least all we do is put our feet together and put one foot in front of the other.”

“The easiest way to strike a pose for someone is to not say a word. I’ll give [my model] a little advice and follow my point of view here. Stand some distance from her and tell her:
“A pose is not simply a pose for posing. You have to pose according to the light source. The direction the light comes in is here. An open garage door. It can be likened to a large window light. What I like to do is turn the body away from the light source until a shadow forms in the center of the dress. Her left leg is now closer to the camera. The leg closer to the camera is usually the one always bending. Then we can turn her face to the light and her eyes back to the camera.”
“When the arm touches the body, it looks taller and flatter. So, you have to provide an excuse to take her arms off her body. You can hold her hand. You may be holding her hair. It may be that the veil is being held out to the bride. It can be anything. Take her arms off her body.”
